Old Radio King, Slingerlands

Loading...

I bought some old Slingerlands, and am hoping someone can tell me I didn't get totally ripped off. I've been wanting to do a Gene Krupa/Lionel Hampton group, and these seem perfect (just need the floor tom). I got the bass drum, snare, two toms, and some random harware and cymbals. I think one of the toms is a WMP Gretsch Broadkaster, minus the badge. I made sure the "clamshell" strainer worked before buying. I paid $900 for the lot, and am hoping finding a similar floor tom won't kill me. After that it will be officially time to stop buying musical instruments.

You got a good deal. 1930s Radio King snares sell for between $500 and 1200. Your snare, since it looks all original, is probably somewhere in the middle of that range. Bass and toms can be worth a few hundred, so you did just fine. Floor toms of this era are the hardest thing to come by and can cost a pretty penny. The earlier ones had cradles instead of mounted legs...if you can find one like that that matches pretty well, it will be worth it to complete the set. Many drummers back then added legs when those mounts became available a little later...so if you find one with legs, it's cooler to have the old style leg mounts.
