Old Mahogany Last viewed: 2 days ago

First of all I have to give a shout-out to Gary (drumfactory) for hooking me up with some old Ludwig bass drum claws that I modified to make floor tom leg brackets so I wouldn’t have to drill the shell…without out him/them my marching snare turned floor tom would be…well, sitting on the floor.

A little while ago I picked up an old L&L Artist bass drum in nice condition and have since added some other mahogany finished drums from the same era to make a set. Hoping to play out with it real soon! Nothing special as far as rarity but man they look cool and old…which they are. I had to snap some pics before I remove the old calf skin heads as I’ll be running Vintage Coated Emps and Coated Ambs on the toms. The bass, when I picked that up, had new Fiberskyn heads and came with the original W.F. Ludwig calfskin heads. I put a Aquarian Force I head on the batter and ported the reso Fiberskyn head hoping it will tame the bass down a little a far as feel. I'll try different beaters too.

Here’s the details:

•10x14 (I was told Rogers Winslow) field snare as mounted tom (not sure date, no stamps or badge)

•12x15 Leedy field snare as floor tom (circa '35)

•14x28 L&L concert bass drum (circa '32)

•3 1/4x13 Wilson Brothers snare (can't get an exact date on this one but the company was only around from 1915 - 1928) Obviously, I don't plan on gigging with this snare but will most likely use my Black Beauty or 402 (both modern).

Awesome kit! Great idea for FT leg mounts. I can't quite figure out how you did it. Can you give more details/info on how you made them? Thanks, gerald.

You’re exactly right!

I used DWSM2141 hoop attachments intended for cowbells, etc. But the claw part on them is made to clamp on modern hoop widths of 2 inches or whatever they are now-a-days. Actually, the Ludwig claw even had to be shortened in order to work and clamp on these narrow earlier hoops. Anyways, here’s a few more pics of how the floor tom brackets go together. As I stated earlier, Gary from Drumfactory sent me some old Ludwig claws that were flaking chrome and ill looking (as I requested!). I didn’t want to risk ruining perfectly good vintage claws, I think it adds to the “old” look of the drums. It’s pretty robust and saved me from having to drill a beautiful mahogany shell.

very nice, I noticed the clamp because I have one for mounting my splash cymbal, they work better than the regular hoop clamps and they don't mark the hoops
