Old Ludwig Bass drum age and finish? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Here`s my take,

I see the finnish as black over gold and then the black pulled off. One of the things they pulled off the paint with looks in the photo to be a seven or upsidedown L, either way, it strikes the shell at the same angle and pulls basically the same amount of paint off.

I think the paint on the finnished BD shell looks more Professionally done by factory or pro shop to be home done !! I see ludwig doing that for a customer !!

What`s the plumbing attachment ?

That's got to be the base of a set of chimes. Possibly the very chimes in the vintage photo of the band?

Isn't that a gas supply line?

Isn't that a gas supply line?

Which photo are we talking about? The bass on the floor or the bass on the shelf? Next to the bass on the floor is the chime bass. No idea what that plumbing is on the shelf.

I love the paint job on both this bass and the Chinese toms. Any more ideas on how this was done? It looks as if the gold paint was dabbed on with a sponge.

That appears to be a very primitive drum rack for the Chinese Toms...I know, when I first saw it I thought it was just something homemade and I would never use. As the questions about the plumbing started coming I went and dug it out of the closet. The Toms had a round bracket screwed to the side and could be threaded to the coupling pieces that can be adjusted anywhere on the curved section. Another intresting thing about it is how formed the bend is and how tite the moveable coupling pieces fit. If it was something made out in the barn it could never have been bent this well. I removed the round brackets and put them away somewhere safe. And when I remember where that is I'll sure post the pics.

I'd love to know more about the Chinese Tom's. I'm sure the History on these early drums is out there somewhere. They still sound pretty good considering their age.

Thanks for all the great posts,

Andy
