Old drum, new life

Loading...

I thought that I'd put up a few photos of my most recent restoration project which I've been working on for the last 18 months. I wanted to create a new Slingerland kit from orphan drums so I took a 1970s 13x9, a late 1950s 15x14 marching snare (became a floor tom) and an early 1950s 24x14 bass drum and turned them into this new beautiful WMP classic. Now maybe there'll be a few purists out there reaching for the defibrillator but think that you'll agree that this is great outcome for these forgotten and abused drums.

1938 8"x15" Leedy Broadway Standard
1947-53 14x6.5" NOB Ludwig & Ludwig Universal
...plus a bunch of mismatched Slingerlands that collectively make a pleasing noise.

Beautiful job. The wmp is nice. I've been toying with the idea of a marching snare as a floor tom since 1971.

Great job! How do they sound?

I really like what you did with the bass drum hoops.

Thanks very much. I'm really pleased with the outcome, particularly the bass drum. It's always a bit of a conflict over trying to preserve a drum in its original condition over acknowledging that it's past its best and to give it a new start. I'm also very happy with the snare/floor tom conversion. It has a nice deep tone but with plenty of punch. The hardest part was the leg brackets because you cannot space them equally around the circumference of the drum without clashing with one of the lugs as you might with a 16" shell. Worked out Ok in the end.

Now that is a job well done! I too am a big fan of putting orphans togethers. You gave all three of those drums a new lease on life. And...did it in a very professional, classy manner. Love 'em!

Thanks for the comments guys. The hoops were really badly chipped and I actually did'nt like the black with the WMP. I was trying to decide what to do with them when I saw a listing on Ebay for a WMP Leedy bass drum with mahogany hoops and I really liked the look. I stripped mine back to the bare wood and then applied two coats of walnut Briwax. Came out nicely I thought.
