Old 1920s NOB snares and retrofitting a P86

Loading...

Has anyone used a millenium throw on one of these old snares? I have a 6-lugger 5"x14"

I would still like to snag a P338 at some point, but my snare will be used for live and studio work.

Thus, the millenium throw would be nice for the user-friendly aspects.

P.S. can an admin please move this post to 'Restoring Vintage Drums'?

1964 Slingerland Sound King 13/15/22 Ebony Satin Stain (refin.)
1965 Ludwig Downbeat 13/16/20 Turquoise Sparkle (rewrap)

1979/80 Ludwig Classic 13/14/24 Wine Red

The Millenium is a beautiful throw, but do its holes line up with those on the shell? If not, you might try one of the throws with a mounting rail instead of fixed-space holes, like the Taye, the Dunnett, or the Drum Foundry RCK.

Hi,

Lots of dialogue out there on the P86. Some of us have had the strainer release in use. The flimsy little set screws broke in an instant.

As I understand it, Ludwig has fixed these problems, so you will probably be wisest to buy new.

I have one on my Supra, and it has worked reliably--but for the set screws--on lots of gigs.

Thanks for the tips, fellas. I had seen some of those newer strainers w/ the sliding screw positions, and they may be the way to go for the sake of playability.

I kinda wanted to 'keep it in the family' of Ludwig if possible, but I'm sure the holes won't line up as they're the same as my 4x14 downbeat snare (piccolo sized strainer hole spacing).

I'll look into some of the dunnett, trick, et al. Thanks again!

The method in this thread may also be an option for you.... you can stay Ludwig without drilling any extra holes.
