Okay... These MIJ kits are STALKING ME! Help!

Loading...

Well, last Friday in a C/L listing this old Pearl popped up... I'm a sucker for a weird wrap, so they followed me home. Now, just what the hell have I got this time!?! Help2

Once again I humble myself before you MIJ Masters...

I checked this and the Pearl Forum. I can't seem to find this tom mount, although it seems original. No extra holes on / in the toms or bass.

The wrap seems to be in darn good shape for the supposed age (late 60's or early 70's I assume)

I may be wrong, but that doesn't look like Luan in the bass drum... so what is it?

The snare is a ten lug 'Astro' (like the Jetson's dog... heh heh heh)

I don't think it's original to the kit, could be wrong...

Best minor thing is the logo is good as is the logo head. Just as an aside, Dana (Bentley) is making logo's for 'Royal Star' and 'Rogers 360' that I gave him. I'm sure he'll want this one as well to copy.

Thanks mucho for any information!

The interior wood appears to be poplar! That blonde color with the green/gray streak sure looks like poplar to me! I've never heard of that before, though, so I'm probably wrong.

That's a good-looking kit and the logo head is EXTRA cool!.

The interior is indeed either poplar or maple. This is a late 67-about 70 kit. The tom mount has a non-original part, the very top piece looks like part of trailer hitch.....The floor tom may have the same inner veneer, but the shells are lauan shells, only the inners are this wood veneer. The toms likely will not have this veneer. My Astro kit was like this. The bass and floor tom veneered with a nice poplar or maple, the mounted toms did not have the veneer, they were like all the other 6 ply shells. The bass will sound best with wood hoops and a ported head. It is ringy and higher tones whit the chrome and closed heads. Nice find!~ Why can't I find these nice kits? I guess living in the "drum desert" does rather suck for my affinity.

EDIT:

And the snare? It is a beast! Again, if you have a drum shop close by, ask they have the Aquarian promotion heads, the Z-100 coated heads. Every drum store I shop around here has them, and I love them! On my woodies especially! But this snare is a work horse and as much as I hate to admit it, it sounds better than the Star snare!

First impression: nice find, but two of the wraps have fading (tom and bass drum): Bummer! Hurting

Then I realized that it's just dust on it ... :D

Cool find. Agree with jonnistix: I'm still waiting for such a poppet as well!

Sorry this took me so long to get back with you guys...

Thanks loads Jonni! I was wondering just how they managed to get decent wood in a MIJ kit of this vintage. And, from your age estimate has to be right on the money. Oh yeah, first the snare. It is NOT a ten lug... maybe it was wishful thinking on my part! It's an eight lug, but you're right. It's a beast! It does remind me a lot of the Royal Star snare.

As far as finding this stuff? No idea buddy... They do seem to find me lately. I did pay a tad more for this one though... $200.00. But, it came with an early 70's Zildjian A 20" ride, same vintage Zildjian A 16" crash and a pair of Sabian 13" AAX Fusion hi hats. Not sure of their vintage. I figure I bought the cymbals and got the drums for free.

The 'trailer hitch' thingy seems to be an add on to raise the height of the rack toms. A close but quick inspection makes me think that if I got rid of the 'hitch' all would be well...

I'm not sure I'd change the Bass Hoops even if I decide to keep the kit (really like that wrap). The snare head on the other hand is a done deal. With Bentley's so close I can get anything...

Thanks again!

I gave him a torn bass drum head with the logo intact. He is having it copied and will make them available when he's finished.
