Ok, so now I'm working on the snare. Bottom bearing edge question?? 60' Slingerland.

Total novice.. sorry if this is a dumb question.DOH

Is it normal for the bearing edges to be flattened where the snare wire strings come through the slots in the bottom hoop to cross the resonant head?

This is a 1960, 6 lug "student model" in WMP, closed S Chicago badge. I took it all apart last night to begin cleaning it up and noticed these two flat spots on the bearing edges and it freaked me out a little.

The drum seemed to sound fine (to my highly trained ear.. NOT). It just seemed to need a good clean up and a new (old) throw off which I have now obtained and can begin this snare project.

However if this bottom bearing edge has been hacked up... I'll just strip the snare and begin looking for a new shell.

Yes, the bottom bearing edge of most snare drums have Snare Beds cut into them. This allows the snares to seat against the head properly.

All is well.
