Odd Head Size!

Loading...

I recently acquired a kit that has a 19.5" bass drum. No joke. I measured the original front head. A standard 20" is too big.

Any clue where I can find a 19.5" head!?

I think what you have is a hide-head, you can have it made.

I think you're onto something with the hide head. I think the kit I have is an entry level German made Roxy. The bass head seemed odd to me but I didn't think they would put a hide head on a starter kit. Maybe it is. Only the front head exists. It doesn't have a rigid frame. It kind of wobbles around.

Any idea where to start looking for someone that does hide heads?

Metric head for a metric shell perhaps? 50 cm = 19.685 inches. Some Premier drums were in metric sizes as well.

Remo make metric heads. There may be some other manufacturers who do as well. And yes, one alternative is to have a custom made calf head done.

Surfcollector: the 19.5 is a German head size from the 60s.

I have a cheaper alternative for you:. Try a 20 inch TOM TOM head. They have a shorter hoop and most of the time the wooden hoop will sit on it just good enough for you to use the existing hardware with no mods. 20 inch Tom hoops aren't expensive, either, use Google. I used one on my Trixon 19.5 bass drum, worked like a charm.
