Years ago, I came to realize that at that point in time, Zildjian's quality had gone downhill as far as I was concerned. I had bought a 21" Sweet Ride off Ebay on the recommendation of a drummer friend, and it was the worst sounding cymbal I had ever heard. I wrote Craigie Zildjian a letter about it, and she called and invited me up the factory to exchange it for anything I wanted. I took her up on it a few months later, and was treated like a visiting potentate. She and the rest of her staff went out of their way to make things right. I was very grateful to them, but outside of the 14" Mastersound hi-hats I use regularly, I am more partial these days to Paiste and Meinl cymbals, along with various Turkish-made brands, although I have bought a few old Zildjians here and there. I just don't connect with new Zildjians anymore for some reason. When I started playing in '64, you either had Zildjians or you had garbage. There really wasn't anything else at that point. Today, there are so many choices in cymbals. Zildjian is simply not my choice. I did the factory tour of Sabian in '05 and was knocked out by the quality and the treatment we got as visitors. Half the fun was having dinner with Bob Zildjian and his wife Willie at their favorite German restaurant. The stories Bob told us were amazing.

Thanks for the post.

I've heard it stated here on VDF that Sabian sounds more like Zildjian these days than Zildjian does...

You're welcome. For whatever reason, I no longer feel that Zildjians work for me. I'm always trying them out in music stores, and always find myself saying, so what. I'm rarely impressed. Having seen the manufacturing process first-hand at Zildjian, I can say with confidence that they spit them out very quickly. I felt they took more time at and care at Sabian. I also found the worker's to be more attentive and dedicated at Sabian.

Regardless of what I think, Zildjian remains the world's most popular cymbal.

I found some A Zildjian late 50's early 60's from a person on Craig's list who had bought some drum items at a estate sale. 20" hand hammered ride that I have been using as my jazz ride for the last few years. Sounds fantastic. I get a lot of compliments on it. Also 14" hats and a 16" crash. I also use Paiste 2002 cymbal set.

Interesting read.Sabian has the same 400 year history but is legally prevented from advertising that.I thought 1623 was the starting year, not 1618. That's what they used to say in the ads.

I can relate somewhat with your statement about the Zildjian pedigree for Sabian cymbals. In the part of the industry in which I worked for thirty years, there are many people who say the same thing about Music Man instruments and amps, And G&L instruments. This is not the real case. The connection is Leo Fender being involved with trying to improve upon the gold standard classics that he had developed at the company that still bears his name. Both of those companies were in violation of trade laws by insinuating a Fender pedigree. As long as Leo was still involved with G&L, we were sort of OK with them using his name and image in their promotions. But, after Leo passed away, the gloves came off.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I'd rather see an article on Sabian, who is, as far as I'm concerned, the REAL Zildjian company.

Hard time convincing me of that. as far as I know, I have a Sabian ride 22, and 16 A crash,..There is a huge difference in the metals used. Much difference in the Copper in the Sabian. Finger prints show up twice as fast and three times as many on Sabian that day. That says Red Copper. After a long time, it appears to me that Sabian is using Red Copper/ New England,... and Zildjian is using refined yellow Copper, of a source they only know.

To me, Sabian is literally family, but not Zildjian Co/ materials. I would love to know how much of my conclusion is accurate. Very hard to convince me that my 22 ride Sabian B8 is not Red Copper mix, I work with both all the time.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!
