Very common in the '50s and '60s for sets to be sold without floor toms. My cousin was a NYC workind drummer then and never owned one.

From mlayton

I played my 22/13 clubdate combos for some time without a floor tom. its actually a lot of fun. makes you be a little more creative with your fills.mike

+1000! Then take away your mounted tom and see what you can do with just a snare and bass. That's all I use when I play in a Dixieland band (+cowbell, and woodblock). Forces you to think outside the Rock/Country/Pop box. Who needs all them toms?!! Didn't Slim Jim Phantom play with only bass and snare with the Stray Cats?

especially with just brushes!

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I'm actually more prone to take a floor tom and not a rack tom.

My dad bought a round badge set back in the early nineties off his buddy who got it for his birthday in 62. When I started restoring it, I must have asked my dad's friend if there was a floor tom. He said nope and my dad had a picture of himself playing his farfisa with him that Christmas. No floor tom. Guess it was kinda the 1st act drum set of the day, or at least since they're probably weren't that many manufactures back then (I can already here people telling me how wrong I am) you just didn't buy a kid a floor tom until he learned to play the drums he had.

Same thing with the hats. It came with a ludwig by paiste crash, and zildjian k's on slingerland hat stand. My hunch is that he didn't buy it at guitar center and then once the item was paid for he went to separate register and the merchant was again double checked.

I never quite understand that. Am I the one they think is stealing, or is it the employees? Is it all of us together trying to form a global cabal that will run them out of business? If you worked at Yoyodyne and went in and asked for a muted post horn what sort of repercussions could you expect?

Got off track there.

I guess there was more of an emphasis on making the sale and putting together a package to satisfy the customer.

Could just be me though.

A modern take on this which I'm sure we'll reflected soon.

Lots and lots hipster hands with a frontperson or guitarist beating the life out of a lone floor tom (usually a bit vintage-ish).

Where are they coming from and, more importantly, where are they going again once said hipsters have had their way with them?
