Nice Star snare on....
Sorry for the bad experience, Mikey. Surely you won't offer the member's name to us ... Shame on him!!!
Perhaps it would be of help next time, when the enquiry comes unclosed via this website. I know from another forum (mikedolbear.com) that it can work well. Maybe because query and answers are public then?!
Nevertheless thanks for publishing this offer.
Ralf

You have your reasons but i think he should be brought forward so he can make an attempt to get back in good standing...or is it to late?

I understand Mikey. I just hope no one else gets burned either from buying or selling to this member.
Sorry to hear about that Mikey, but I can gladly report I won this fine drum and am very stoked!!! :) It will be lovingly cleaned and restored as best I can using the tips I have gotten on here through the years. It looks like a pretty good deal to me, I did get it for a little less than you originally paid (my total is $66.12). Must have been God's will, because I didn't really have the $ for it, but have always wanted a wooden vintage snare with reinforcement hoops, and the price I paid can't be beat for a first taste. Besides, Tama is one of my favorite companies (LOVE the Lever Glide hat stands!!), so I have a piece of history to boot now!!
Any ideas on what heads I should buy for this snare please? I prefer Evans heads, but since many of the gurus on here know so much more about these excellent drums and what head combos work for them, any brands and ideas would be greatly appreciated. And what type of snare strand would you all recommend please? Thank you.
I got the snare about a week ago now, and I must say I am very pleased with my purchase. It is in much better shape than I could have ever hoped for, and after a cleaning with Dawn and Windex, then waxing with TurtleWax Chrome Polish, she looks nearly new!! I was expecting lots of rust, but thank God there was only one or two tiny areas...amazing for a '63 snare. I was very surprised at how thin the wood actually is, you can actually see it flex when CAREFULLY pressing against it (don't want to crack my piece of Tama drum history)! It sounds better than I thought it would too, very sensitive, dry, and not a lot of overtones, which is what I like with my snares.
I took a few 'before' pictures, and will take some 'after' cleaning pictures soon and post if anyone cares to see the transformation. I now have to figure out how to bring the wrap back to like new condition too. One tip I did not see mentioned (or overlooked) about cleaning a vintage wood snare is what I learned the hard way: if you like to remove tension rods with your fingers as I do, DO NOT touch the interior of your wood shell drum or you will have a black or dark grease/oil stain left on your new toy. That will not happen again, and I will pay more attention to the craftsman who does his restoring using gloves, a capital idea!!
