Newer Ludwig Supraphonic 6.5"

Loading...

I just picked up a newer 6.5" Supraphonic for $50. The guy said it is only slightly out of round. I cant tell the difference. It has gaskets under the lugs, which i am going to remove. It doesn't have cup washers on it though. I figured all the metal shell snares would have them. I cleaned it up and realized that I will have to purchase new washers for it, because without the lugs, the post fits through the hole too much. Does anyone know anything about the newer blue and olive badge supraphonics? It has a full badge with a serial number, so it isn't a b-stock, and why would they use flat washers on a metal snare? I did notice that even with the gaskets, you can't tighten the screws down all the way. It does sound good though. Any help would be lovely.

Nice drum! Why remove gaskets? It not only eliminates direct metal to metal contact, if you remove them, the tension rods will splay.

Clean it up, tune it up and just enjoy the hell out of it.

Great score.

Too many great drums to list here!

$50?? Wow! I second Purdie's comment; replace the gaskets. It may not be as "vintage" that way, but there have been some technological advances in drum building in the past 30 years or so. Take advantage of them. Cup washers might be a good idea if the screws are long enough.

I removed the gaskets. It really opened up the drum. The gaskets are pretty thick and wide. As far as metal to metal goes, I am cool with it. It didn't hurt the older ones. There is also very little lug splay. I do think Ludwig should go back to using springs instead of those rubber keepers in the lugs. I am pleased with it.

I can't believe I actually own it. I kinda feel like I should throw the guy some extra cash or buy him dinner or something. He knows drums very well, so its not like he doesn't know how much it is worth. Maybe he was just tired of looking at it and wanted some karma points. Maybe I will bake him a supraphonic cake.

Hey, nice score!

But when you said "newer," I was thinking one with a Monroe badge, not a pointy B/O one! The B/O badge is actually from my era, but I guess it's still "newer" when compared to the "older" keystone badges!

Although I've never owned a Supra this size, I've never met anyone who had one who didn't like it. I play a Pearl Jupiter (1978 model) the same size and wouldn't trade it for anything!
