Newbie (to VDF) in Central NJ

Loading...

Hi all: tried to figure out where the Introductions Forum was on VDF, but couldn't figure out how to start a new post there. Anyway, wanted to say "hi" to all members of VDF. My avatar, "MikeCozy57" is homage to my grandfather, Mike Kotcher, a jazz drummer from the 40's and 50's in Jersey/New York who encouraged me as a young drummer in the 60's and 70's. He traveled by bus in 1957 from Rochelle Park, NJ to Manhattan to take lessons with Cozy Cole at the Krupa/Cole studio. I have receipts signed by Cozy for $3.75 for a half hour lesson! I own a mid-60's Rogers Holiday kit in Londoner configuration with a 60's 22"Zil ride, 18"Zil crash/ride, 16"Zil thin crash, and 30's signed Zil 11" paper thin splash. Still taking lessons, and turned 56 today. Look forward to learning lots on VDF!

Welcome to this den of iniquity for drum addicts! :p

You're with kindred spirits. Enjoy the forums and I look forward to seeing some shots of your kit. I like that you're still actively studying. No matter how long we've been playing, there is always something to work on and something new to learn. The fun part happens when you get to apply what you've learned. Are you currently playing with anyone? What kind of music are you into?

Hey John: thanks for the welcome. I look forward to getting to know the gurus and regulars on VDF. I'm studying with a guy in NJ with an eclectic background, from Latin to Fusion to Classic Rock to Jazz. I've done Jazz, Rock and Contemporary Christian worship music. 60's and 70's Classic Rock is what I love the most. Due to my work schedule, I can't commit to regular practice, so gigging is out. Soon, though.... What about you?

> What about you?

At the moment I only get to jam with two old musician buddies, (guitar and bass) every few months. My bass player lives in upstate New York and the guitar player is in PA, but a two hour drive away. I can only get them both to drive down here to me a few times a year. The guitar player is a writer, so we play some classic covers for our own entertainment and mostly we play/work on, his original material. It's good stuff, blues drenched rock. Fun music to play, and because of the power trio set-up, there's lots of room in the music for me to stretch out.

My last 'working' gig was a year ago. Busy local blues band needed a sub for their drummer for 6 mos. I auditioned along with four other guys and miraculously, I won the spot. Great line-up in that band, the band leader sang and played lead guitar, his wife, who has a great set of pipes, shares lead vocals, then there is; (me) drums, rhythm guitar, bass player, keyboard, tenor sax, trumpet and harp. (harmonica) They are a smoking, tight band. Those guys have been playing together for almost 30 years. Look them up on You Tube: Dave Mell Blues Band. I miss playing with them. But, I do get to jam from time to time with my old buddies and after 50 years of knocking around, that's all that matters to me. I'm 64, I plan to 'bop till I drop'!

Welcome aboard...
