Newbie: Hello and info on Vintage YC220

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and looking forward to learning more about vintage gear and drums in general. I've been playing for a long time and currently own a 90's set of Recording Customs in Cherry Wood. However, there is a Yamaha C220 that is for sale here in Perth, Western Australia, and although overall it's in superb condition with all parts intact, I would like to know what the shells are made of and if they are any good? I'm not a collector and would be buying it to gig and play shows. I had a knock yesterday and it was cool but perhaps it's a bit dated to be taking out on gigs? It would be miked for all shows and so the projection wouldn't be an issue and I am guessing that close miked, it could sound pretty cool?

I appreciate any help and feedback and look forward to getting to know the place a little better. I will post a few photos of my gear that I have owned in the main forum perhaps.

Here are listing details from similar Yamaha kit sold by Revival Drums in Portland Ore.

For your consideration is an incredibly rare complete Yamaha outfit from 1969. This Y-Badge C220 features a 6 lug 14x20" kick, a 6 lug 8x12" rack, a 6 lug 14x14" floor, and a 6 lug 5x14" snare. All shells are constructed from Yamaha's second-to-none birch/luan blend and are the only Japanese kits of the era with an American-looking horizontal inner ply. All shells have re-rings, all edges are factory and in great shape.

Not a Guru... just interested..

perfectly gigable and really well made drums. The lugs and mounts are all good too. Only a 6 lug bass drum but still does the trick. The 220 has 13 and 16 toms and I don't think these will have rerings and will have a really nice clean birch ply on the insides.

I have actually just agreed to the sale of this kit. It's so nice and clean that i rarely take it out through fear of it getting damaged. That's the problem with minty kits:) However, i've seen quite a few working drummers gigging these kits here in NZ. There is also a pro British session drummer and Yamaha endorsee that plays a set.

Thanks for all the great info but alas, I took too long to think it over and it sold yesterday. It was mint, with all original fittings from what I could see and had a great vibe about it. Oh well, at least I am more aware of the great offerings from early Japanese kits at Yamaha.

They went for $500 Australian, which was a very reasonable price I thought.
