Right! From the 2nd pic I thought it was a divot [concave] between front-of-lug and bearing edge, but of course it is a hump [convex] at the back of the lug! Defo from over-tension or just tension over long long time.

Check it for splay [thanks for terminology OddBall], if the rods and claws work, then do a dry run with your cortex wrap to see if it will follow contours. If it does, wrap away...

One idea I had for this kind of situation is to replace back-end casing mounting screws with threaded rods long enough to *almost* reach center of shell, then connect rods from opposing casings with coupling nuts. Slowly add tension over time to bring down the hump. Might be a tick difficult to source rods as 12-24 NC is not used anymore...
