New to vintage drums, just bought a set lots of questions!

Loading...

Hi Guys!

Just recently I made my first purchase of vintage drums! I just wanted to know what they are worth and what I should do for replacing lost parts. Sorry if i sound a little incompetent......

My initial internet research has told me that I have a 1976 pro beat ludwig kit. This information is based off my serial number on my blue and olive stamp. (Seller said it was either a 69 or 70 so much for that!) The kit has a mahogany wrap.

Sizes are as follows:

13 inch tom

14 inch tom

16 inch tom

18 inch tom

24 inch bass

I do not have the snare (did kits come with the snares back then?)

All mufflers are intact

Parts missing:

Bottom hoops for the 14, 16, and 18 inch toms

16 tension rods

Parts broken:

the rack tom mount is screwed up I think its striped

the muffler on the 18 inch tom rattles when the drum is played

Here are my main questions...

Should I try to find original hoops and tension rods?

How should I fix the rack tom mount?

Did I get ripped off?

Everything above plus a rack of three roto toms and a ludwig ghost pedal were given to me for $650

Thanks so much for your help!!!

Pics would help.

The RT mount is easily replaceable....parts on eBay.

Same with the hoops....although you have to be sure they really are Luddy hoops. But those sizes are commonly available on auction.

Rip-off ? Pics would help.

Off the top of my head...if the kit has an 18" FT of that era...that FT ALONE would fetch $200 on the used market. So...no...I would say you didn't get ripped off.

It might not have been a STEAL...but you didn't get taken.

1976 sounds correct.

They are the real deal, as we say! They are real Ludwigs and the wrap is indeed mahogany cortex.

The 24" bass drum is HIGHLY desirable!

I think you did well from the looks of it. $650 is a good price for a matched kit in those sizes with no extra holes drilled into them or any other major alterations. I think you should check around the internet for the spare parts and put them back together. If you come out of the deal for under $1000.00 (for proper stands, etc.) then you will have yourself a real beauty on your hands. And the sound those drums will make (when set up properly -get that blanket out of the bass drum and some decent heads!) will infect you! Cool1:2Cents:

If you can't find the correct vintage rims, then you really should get some cheap, generic rims in the meantime and get those bottom heads on there. Two reasons:

1.)The shells can warp without the bottom heads on and also

2.)the bering edges can get damaged.

you guys have any ideas where i could pick up some of the parts?

i bought some new rims but they are heavier I think there gibraltor

should i search for vintage tension rods or just by new ones?

Looking like from what you guys said I should get the drums playable with new stuff then search for the vintage parts.
