Powertone snares are going for 200.00,60's versions 250.00,the sound king metal snares 175.00 225.00, so you got the swivo era drums for 200.00 if you look at it that way. I was under the impression that even the 9/72 drums were going for 600.00 to 800.00. I think you got a good deal.

A lot of the 9/72 labeled drums (made from 9/72-1975) were 3 ply with re rings, the earlier fullerton 1969 - 1971 were 5 ply with 5 ply re rings.

Were the 3ply shells from 72-75 Jasper or Keller like the earlier 5ply?

Just to clarify, I actually paid $600 AND gave him my SK snare. So we're in the ballpark of $800 all together.

Ploughman, do you recommend replacing the BD reso head for sonic reasons? I put a ps3 on the batter and it still sounds a little flabby with the original front head. I'm looking for a deeper, punchier sound.

Can I tell if they are 3 or 5 ply just by examining them?

Not necessarily. I have had my original set since 1979. The center of the reso was cut out in a great big hole. The fiberskyn was put on there because it looked really cool. With the shield and the vinyl logo I found I did not require further dampening. You might try a felt strip on your existing reso.
