New Stars Before Rehab

Loading...

Just picked these up yesterday. The 12" tom appears to be different from the rest of the kit as it doesn't have an internal muffler like the 13" and the floor have. It also just has a Made In Japan badge where the others all have Star badges. Another project but I am just about done with my Rogers rehab and like doing this kind of stuff. Did not really need them but I figure it would be fun to see what they will look like and play like after cleaning and polishing etc.

The shape of the mounting bracket on the tom (vs. the 13) and also a close-up of the lug may be able to confirm it is Star and not Pearl. Then again - perhaps all the MIJ badges like that were Star - a limitation of my 'expertise'.

I will ask the obvious that all will be wondering - 9ply or 3ply with rings?

Be sure to see the new Star site (by RALF) to learn more about it....you may be able to nail down the exact year there and learn even more.

Perhaps you are already there?

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Here is a photo of the tom mount. Lug should show up well there also, it looks like the 920 Star lug to me.

So what do you think Star or Pearl?? Looking at Ralf site I am thinking Star but I may be wrong.

Looking through vent hole I don't see any rings so I am assuming 9 ply. I haven't had time to take the heads off yet, until I finish my Roger project.

As far as I can tell - it looks identical - and if it is not, it could possible be detected by some good photos of the lugs. Looking through the vent hole, do they have gray interiors? If both do, it is safe to say that they are both Star.

Enjoy that restore -as it looks to be quite complete (and the BD anchor too!!) . What cymbals did you get with it? Any MIJ?

The snare drums was just a vertical grained natural colored Luan I think, and I suspect the others are the same, as near as I could tell when looking through the vent hole, to check for rings earlier today, but they are in my back garage now and I will check for sure tomorrow. The lugs on the all the toms and BD are the same style. The tom mount looks like the Star mount in Ralf's PDF.

The little splash(?) cymbal has a MIJ stamp in the bell on the underside. The bigger cymbal has no distinguishing marks that I can see and the hats were Canadian Zilcos but the top hat has a crack by the bell which I drilled to hopefully stop it. The hats sound very good, I was surprised.

Good deal on the Zilcos! I have never even seen any of those in person. I might be interested in the larger of the other 2 cymbals. Let me know if you find any markings at all. If you don't find any at all, they may be Zildjian 2nds or something?? Honestly, I have never heard an MIJ splash sound any good. Have you?

Hello,

From all I've seen before from these blue round 'Made in Japan' badges, they are made by Star. It may be, that this rack tom was added a little later and wasn't available any more with a Star badge, but with this MIJ badge.

The 'Pro Pedal' is Star made, too.

May I use your pic of your drumset and this blue round badge for my website, please?

Ralf

After looking at the photo's.This is what i think the 12" tom is made by Pearl.I have seen this blue badge on Pearl made drum's also have seen the tom mount on Pearl too...

A few ways to tell for sure is on the lugs that Star made one is rounded on top, when you look at the top side of the lug at the two lines is the middle line piece rounded? Or is it flat? When you look at the mounted screws on the inside of the drum are they big in size that would be Star if small head size thats Pearl...

On the T-rods are they thin metric that would be Star of big size metric that would be Pearl...

If you can post some photos of the lugs close up and even in photo also the mounting screws...Mikey
