New project - Kent 5" X 13" Piccolo snare.

Loading...

Closer to 4 7/8" but who's counting!!

I had an 8" X 13" Kent champagne sparkle tom which at some point, had suffered some water damage (before I owned it), but only on the outter edge of one side. I decided to try and convert this shell into a piccolo snare, just for the experience and fun of it.

The wife was kind enough to get me a table router for my B-Day so I finally had the last tool needed in my arsenal to do a proper drum resto/rehab/mod, without having to schlep my shells over to a friends house.

Anyhoo... I got started tonight. I cut the shell down from 8" to 5" and then cut some 45 degree bearing edges on it. I plan to use some original Kent lugs with shorter tension rods as well as a piccolo style strainer which I'll need to order from drummaker.com.

Before and after pics to come soon!

Hey man, when you did the bearing edges did you have a special super flat

table set up with the router underneath? Or did you free hand it from above?

Thanks

I think he mentions a table in his post.

I see the table mentioned but I guess I meant to say special table, like

super flat melameen formica top with router mounted underneath for

moving the shell on top against the router. Or is he just using a stock

router table. Sorry if I'm not making sense, heh. :)

Kind of wondering for some potential work I might do myself is why I'm asking...

you can make a router table by mounting a router to a 3/4" piece of plywood thats big enough for a bass drum. You don't need a fence for doing edge work. Its the poormans router table!

I just used the standard table 18" X 13". I'm thinking of building a larger one though for bigger drums (kicks, floor toms, etc...) as mentioned by lucky. Just need a large hunk of flat wood say, 30" X 30" and you mount the router out near the edge, leaving enough room for the largest drum to sit flat without hanging off the table.

Pics will be up later. I'm trying to figure out how to use my new phone/camera.

p.s. I have a couple of 1 7/8" X 13" shells if anyone needs them :) hmmm... maybe I'll

make a couple tambourines out of them ;)

After cutting 1.75" from each side. I'm left with a 4 7/8" deep shell.

Better view of the newly cut edges. A little hand sanding and we're ready to create the snare beds.
