New old school hardware from A & F

Loading...

It's really easy to dismiss this company (and their founder) as a hipster doofus and being an overpriced drum maker that no one asked for and for just being.....well........ too cool for school.

However, it's hard not to like his passion for vintage hardware and he obviously is a vintage hardware collector. His drums aren't my cup of tea and neither is this hardware, but I admire him for doing unique stuff that no on else is doing and even though I may not like it, it's another choice for ALL of us. Kudos to him.

What do YOU think?

Fantastic stuff, other than original vintage hardware those stands are the only thing that i would get and use on my kits.

Keep fixing them up...

That snare basket looks a whole lot like the Tama Classic, I must say.

Plainly, a vintage hardware aficionado. I like the ideas, and his presentation.

But these are pretty pricey - which is not to say the value isn’t there - so I couldn’t see replacing my current setup.

The snare stand starts at $149 per the A & F website.

And on their site, to me these stands look kind of ... clunky.

But I’m not anywhere close to being their target audience.

Some neat ideas there. I kind of like the cymbal stand. The base is reminiscent of the early Slingerland "Buddy Rich" cymbal stands but with more adjustability. As for snare stands I much prefer the "Buck Rogers" style basket that clamps onto the drum. I know some consider those to be tone killers but I'm willing to trade off a bit of resonance for security. If you don't tighten it down in a "death grip" any choking seems minimal anyhow.

Not sure if the nickel plating is my cup of tea. There's a reason chrome took over from nickel plating. While they look similar when new (as they should since the nickel layer is the reflective surface you see on chrome plated items) the almost transparent outer layer of chrome protects the nickel surface from tarnishing. I get that he likes the patina of older nickel but personally I prefer the longevity and shine of a well plated piece of chrome hardware. I do get that the nickel plate fits the esthetic of the rest of their drum line though. In that regard I suppose it's a good marketing choice. If you had one of their "old timey" looking sets then this stuff would be a great match to it and obviously that's what they are shooting for.

Despite that I could see giving one of the boom cymbal stands a try if they were priced a bit more attractively. I have plenty of stands as it is so no real reason to buy more unless I just want one because they are "neat" but price definitely factors into that equation and these cross over the "too much for me" threshold.

I wonder if a similar Hi-Hat stand is in the works?

I could see myself using some of this, although I don't think their cymbal stands go as high as I need. I do like some of their ideas and wouldn't mind experimenting.

I find it odd that a straight stand costs more than a boom.

The whole series is rather expensive, but then again, so are A&F drums.
