New Member, New "kent" kit! I've got some questions

Loading...

Hey everybody, nice forum you have here. I recently picked up an old kent kit. I know they where at one time US made, but this kit is clearly Japanese. The kit was unmolested when I got it, still had the original heads on it, but a kinda grimey. After a full clean up and polish plus some new heads, it sounds pretty good! I posted a pic of the floor tom. It looks to be purplish in the pic, but it's blue. My question is, what vintage are these drums? Where did they stand in the line-up of *** import drums? They have a grestch-like grey paint inside, the bearing edges are real nice, and the sizes are 12,13,16,20. Any help on them would be great, thanks

Larry

RE: age: Probably early to mid-70's

BEAUTIFUL color! The Japanese had some of the coolest looking wraps.

He's from about the same era, ain't he...? (Might've been made in Japan, too...)

I've never actually SEEN an imported Kent. By the looks of the pics it LOOKS better than the Luan crap that would usually be associated with imported drums. It actually looks like birch or maple by the way the paint is nice and smooth and not sucked into the grain as it would have with Luan!!

How do they sound??

Gumby is vintage! The drums actually sound good when mic'ed, especially the bass. I took them all apart, put some little foam squares behind the spring in the lugs, so there is no buzzing. When the heads are off, they definitely have that "smell" that other *** drums i have had do. I don't know if anyone else notices that. I'm using coated G2's on the batter and clear G1's on the resonant. When the tom is held by the rim (not sitting in the stand), it sings.

OK, OK, the doctor is in! Please excuse the mess and dust in the house, I'm in the middle of some restoration/renovation in the old center hall colonial, so everything is everywhere. I keep the dust off the drums, though. Here's some pics of the kit/ along with the ludwig standard snare that came with the deal. It had the original heads on it, and cleaned up sweety! sounds good too. What is that wrap called?
