g'day.I'm new here.I have been trying to resurrect my old Stewart kit for a while now. Its not easy finding them with the same blue wrap mine have.I have found some-but note that they all seem to have less "chrome" & different tom mounts. My old set also has internal adjustable "dampers" in them.(None of the others I've seen, don't).Is my old kit some kind of "rare bear" or something?

Anyone with some insight? Sure would like to know!

Welcome!

From the pictures I have seen Stewart's came with some really awesome looking wraps. Sounds like you have a great kit to bring back, which is probably quite visually striking... congrats!

Can't contribute much on rarity... I know that lots of the good folks who post here enjoy working with MIJ stencil kits. Use that search feature and look for "stewart" that will get you what has been posted previously.

By all means... let's see some pictures.

Hi, hoadie!

You've come to the right forum! To answer your question concerning stencils, jonnistix has an excellent explanation. Use the search engine. From what I understand, Stewart Drums may have had a couple of "parent" companies, Star and Pearl, depending on the date of manufacture. Again, use our search engine. These vintage drums are addictive. Go slowly and enjoy the ride!

Nobody telling me yet how to post pics.

I haven't played these drums in 30 years.Got 'em new in '68.Still in great nick, but some of the stands are getting blemished.

Stencil kit... in the 60's companies in Japan made their drums to look like the popular Amercian made drums of the day.

So "stencil" as in to make a copy of.

The drum shells were typically made of a type of plywood call luan. The grain inside the shell will run vertically top to bottom rather than horizontally around the drum which is typical of American drums.

Many times the hardware was made of cheaper kinds of metal. Some of the drums were really junk and couldn't really be worked with too much.

BUT.. the wraps were always very, very cool. The drums like your Stewarts probably are based on the pictures I have seen have reinforcing rings and decent edges and can be tuned up very nicely... so have it and have fun.

Here is a link that talks about this genre of drums.. http://reviews.ebay.com/Vintage-Japanese-Drums-Identification?ugid=10000000012275673

well,I tried to post couple pics last nite.I'll hafta retry later. Some things to note about this Stewart set..It has an all metal(chrome )snare-with no tag.All toms & snare have internal/adjustable dampers. The hardware on the bass has retractable SPIKES for holding it in place. I haven't seen ANY of these things on other Stewart kits. The additional drums I picked up last weekend dont have Chrome rings on the bass,either..& what appears to be less sturdy hardware. I've searched the web & so far haven't found anything to help me w/info on this.I've owned this kit from new('68).

Maybe this will help. Some pics of the Stewarts I had. The wrap is a aqua/blue sparkle. Still kicking myself for selling it.
