New Member. First Post. New Slingerland Project

First of all hi to everyone.

I just picked up a March of '64 20" bass drum and 12" tom.

The inside of the shells were painted black, but I've sanded them down to bare wood and the dates came through (phew!).

I'm going to restore these but not to original. I'm going to add a rail mount but the one by Gibralter that has modern function. I don't want a museum piece, I want to play these.

Maybe you can see from the pics that it looks like these had a rail mount and a double mount at one time. I figure that a rail mount would look the best and most functional. I'd hate to put a Set-O-Matic mount on these, at least the Gibralter mounts look period correct.

Also they had strange holes for the bass drum spurs (you can see them in the first picture). Very low to the bottom. I have to believe that they were someones idea of spurs and I'm going to add the Slingerland ones. I hate to cut new holes in the shell, I just don't think I have any other choice.

I'm going to need to buy new 12" rims. Any idea how to know whether the rims are real Slingerlands or not? I had a Slingerland set YEARS ago (my first drum set) and I remember the rims to be very rounded at the top. Is there any way to know for sure that I'm buying Slingerland rims?

I picked these up for $175! I think I got a great deal.

I will probably have a lot of questions for you guys, just wanted to say hi!

The Sticksaver hoops are quite distinctive... Just look closely around Ebay .. you'll soon recognise what you are after...

Good project..

Cheers

Welcome, fellow Slingerland enthusiast.

The Slingerland hoop is the Stick Saver, a triple flange hoop where the top flange turns inward instead of outward as it does on standard hoops. I like them so much I use them on my non-Slingerland snares. The rim click is ferocious.

If you are not so much into the museum piece aspect, you can get stick saver hoops from Drum Factory Direct for only $15:

12" Chrome Stick Saver hoop.

Thanks for the welcome!!!

I found some Slingerland stick savers on eBay so I'm good there.

Here's a question, are all bass drum hoops the same? I need a set of 20" wooden hoops, I see them all over ebay. Will Gibralter or other brands work on my Slingy's? And what's with the metal hoops?

I also measured my tom and found out that its a 13x9 not a 12x8 as listed in the eBay ad. That's ok tho, I like the deeper tones of a 13.

Welcome!!!

Very cool project you have there! I am knee-deep in a Slingerland one myself. Would you happen to be looking for a matching 1960's 16x16 floor tom? I have an extra one from a parts kit that needs a little work, but it would fit your kit perfectly. I have no need for it and would give you a great deal.

If interested, please PM (private message) me and we can talk details. Good luck with the rest of your project!

Aftermarket 20" wooden hoops should work just fine. No reason to mess with the metal ones. Nothing wrong with them, but they were not used on vintage Slingerlands.

Just get the hoops already routed for the inlay strip and you're good to go.

My 20" Slingerland bass drum came with an aftermarket wooden hoop and I cut my own inlay channel in it on a friend's router table. Fits just fine.
