New Member - First Post - Help Question

I'd like to find out some accurate information about my vintage Ludwig drums; Name/Model Type, Year and Worth -(approximate dollar value based on condition). Originally purchased in Massachusetts around 1979-80 as a (5) piece with 5"x 14" Supraphonic Chrome Snare (not included). All drum hardware (rims, lugs, etc.) are original and in very good condition. All drums sound awesome and inside shells still smell new. Some of the following info is my best guess.

Shell Material: Wood (Maple)

Finish: Natural Maple Wood

Plys: 6-ply

Dimensions: 22x14, 16x16, 13x9, 12x8

Badge: Blue&Olive with Serial Number (pointed edges)

Serial Numbers: Bass-1813584;16"Tom-1813536;13"Tom-1813537;12"Tom-1813538

Interior: natural (not painted)

Defects: 13"Tom-small crack (repaired); Internal Muffles Removed (holes intact); Some wear & tear on finish.

Hello vinneical... and Welcome to the forum!

Based on the information supplied, I would say you have the Big Beat kit, which was a very popular outfit. Very cool that 3 of the serial numbers are consecutive! Badges were in a bin and the assembler would just grab a handful to apply to the shells. It may have just been luck, or possibly requested to have close serial numbers.

I would guess this Big Beat kit is from around 1978. The shells would be 6-ply during this time period.

Value is always tough to determine without pictures, but based on what you describe, I would guess that $1000 - $1200 would not be out of line. Other members will probably weigh in with their thoughts.

Always liked natural Maple kits.

Those 6-ply shells are some of the best sounding drums I've ever played and that Ludwig ever made. I don't know what kind of music you play, but that kit will be perfect for anything. Enjoy them.

Since the info I received from my first post I've come across a term I believe might be relative to my Lugwigs - "Thermogloss Finish". Does anybody know how I might find out if this process was used on my kit?
