New Kit...Bollero MIJ Funky!

Loading...

Hey y'all,

This is my first vintage MIJ kit.

I found these very unique "Bollero" MIJ drums & hardware locally for $100.

The first thing that struck me was the wrap. Not quite a Sky-Blue Pearl, its lighter in tone, almost a "Baby" blue.

The other striking thing is the 10 lug snare and bass. I was surpised to find 10 lug MIJ drums! The shells are very nice with no re-rings but appear to be Mahogany and another lighter type of tropical wood (on the ft). The lugs seem to be a Slingerland repro. but with Ludwig style knock-off tom holders and floor tom leg mounts. The rail mount is partially present. Very bizarre but awesome kit!

Calling you MIJ experts out there...can you tell me more? The name of the wrap, origins? The condition is excellent for the whole kit including flat base hi-hat and snare stands.

All she just needs a good clean up. Better pics to come.

Cheers!

Did Bo Derek come with the kit?

(Sorry, I guess you'd have to be old to get that...)

Nice kit!

Bolero was a line of Star. It is not the first with a ten lug snare. My 70's Star snare also has such a configuration. Recently, I lent my daughter's boyfriend a few dollars to buy a set of Boleros. The black wrap was not near as nice as yours! His badges resemble a triangular flag. jonnistix will be able to supply more information than I. He is a fountain of knowledge!

Bo Derek! Man, I must be old too! She is still hot! So are your drums!

This is the second Bollero with that specific badge to surface recently. Anyway on to the dissection...

As for the color, try here:

Or here:

Or maybe here...:

You should be able to find the correct color in these pages.

Thanks for the comments and input. I think the drums are better than the Bo Derek film of the same name :)

There is very little pitting on the kit. What looks like pitting is actually grime that will come after some elbow grease.

Here are some more pics. Thanks jonistix for the catalogue pages. after looking at the wraps it is for sure the Blue Marine Pearl wrap from the Star catalogue.

Wasn't "Star" the name of the Tama drum company's founder's wife?. Tama still uses the Star name on their top of the line kits, the "StarClassic" so the Star connection to Tama lives on?

Any more info on this kit would ne so much appreciated.

Cheers!

....actually...these appear to be later that the catalogs I suggested. These are after the Star exit from the market and Pearl taking over a vast majority of the SLMS contracts. The knobs on the strainer and muffler are indeed Pearl, not Star, so there is yet another set of cat pages that will give the color as "Light Blue Pearl"...I think...

It was not uncommon for the stencil distributors to request the older wrap as available, to get the best deal they could. Doing this was cost efficient for both manufacturer and re-seller.

Nice research jonnistix. So, what year then would you date this kit?

Also, why the 10 lug snare and bass on a kit that was supposed to in the lower-end market of the time? Was this an attempt to be higher end?

Thanks again,

Sometime between 74 and 76, maybe 77...It's hard to tell as the catalogs are not really all that concurrent from Pearl to stencil brands. Sometimes it seems the stencils had to take a back seat to the branded as far as hardware goes. Likely not as late as 78 though. Seems by then there was definite way pf doing things and it was about this time all the goods seem to gel into Pearl and not-Pearl.
