New guy with vintage drum questions......

New guy here. Played long ago from the mid 60's to early 80's. Have played on and off since if there was a set around the house. Got my first set (70-71) was a used late 60's vintage 5pc Rogers silver sparkle. Second set (74-75) was a brand new wood finish Slingerland 7pc with double 24" bass drums. Sold both sets long ago. Anyway fast forward some 20+ years I'm looking into buying another set. We currently have a 5pc Ludwig starter set we bought for the kids and myself to tinker on a few years ago. But our 18yr old son has claimed them as his (saw him lick them) and I tuned and set them up to his liking. So I'd like to buy my own. I'd really like a vintage Rogers or Slingerland, 60-70's Vintage, 5-6 pc drums. Either 2 mounted toms or 2 floor toms, or both, single bass 22"-24", good snare. WMP, blue or silver sparkle or wood finish. What are the current prices like?

Also as a comparison how are the new Rogers and Slingerland drums? I'm more interested in the vintage stuff but very curious if the new sets are US made or?... and how they sound and play overall? And how are they priced? Slingerland sells a Krupa Sig set that looks pretty cool. But can't find any prices on either brand on the web stores. I know this is manily a vintage forum so I don't mean to ruffle feathers if this is not a good idea to discuss. Just let me know.

I've been out of the drum scene a very long time on this and have just started to research things. But any advice would be appreciated. I've spent a few weeks reading everything here and the attached sites and the pictures and research done here is incredible! I've learned quite a bit already. I do have more questions but will address those later.

Thanks,

Glenn.

The new Rogers is not much more than an import kit. Slingerlands (newer) are still available, but not being made anymore.

I'd say save your bucks, and go vintage. Lot's of good deals out there

lncorrect - there ARE still drums with the Slingy name being sold - hell, l don't even now who owns the name at this point, but it hardly even matters - they are just your typical set of contemporary, overpriced drums. The Rogers ones are worse because they are just low-end Yamaha stuff. Both of those names are nothing but... names... now - keep away from 'em. Heck, an old vintage it would cost you way less anyway. Hit eBay or Craigslist etc.

I did say that Slingerland were still available, I just thought they weren't being made anymore. I disagree about the quality of Slingerland now, some of their higher end stuff is nice, but Rogers still needs to step up. This is a quote from a website I found regarding the drum company:

In 1994, Slingerland once again changed hands, when it was purchased by the Gibson guitar company. Gibson still owns the company today, and drum production is based in Conway, Arkansas.

I'm sure I heard somewhere that production halted again....

Thanks very much for the info. I did see Slingerland was part of Gibson now. Wasn't sure about Rogers and who owned them if anyone. Other than the websites there's not much info except for dealers. The local music store is a Ginson dealer and was also on the Rogers site as a dealer. I'll see if they have pricing. Curious more than anything. I have to say the new Ludwig set we have sounded great out of the box except for the snare. Very pleased with that for what it is.

I'll be looking around for a nice vintage set. I'll update when I come across something. Thanks again everyone.

Oddly enough. My two main kits are a 60's Rogers Holiday and a 2004 Slingerland kit.

I love my new Slingerlands.

I checked with the local music store and they can price and get Rogers but show no listing or pricing of Slingerland through Gibson. The store here was bought out by Guitar Center Inc so they have a decent selection to order from. I'll have prices in the next day or so and will post them. I've pretty much decided to buy vintage set though. I'll at least see how they are priced.

Isaac, those are some nice kits you have there! Best of luck with them.
