New guy, well old guy really

Loading...

Hi everyone,

As I approach 50 years old, I suddenly began to long for my long-gone first kit, an early 60's Ludwig 3 piece, which was in white pearl.

When my folks moved, and I was about 11, that kit was sold, and I didn't play drums any more. Instead I became a bass player (don't shoot me).

So I'm spending way too much time on craiglslist and ebay, trying to find something to fill that mid-life crisis void.

I just ran across a 64-65 brass Supra, with a $465. BIN so I nailed it.

I hope I did OK, but without being up to date on the inside scoop about values and prices, I'm bound to take a few beatings out there...it's OK, as I will learn.

I appreciate this forum being here, and I'll probably have a ton of questions. I hope you'll be good enough to tolerate a newbie and share your knowledge.

Thanks!

Mike

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum! Are you looking for the same type Ludwig kit? We can probably help you find it.

I saw that snare, and I wrote to the seller...I have a feeling it's not really brass. I think what he thought was brass was actually the layer of copper plating between the chrome and aluminum. It's still a great drum, but if you're looking for brass, I would make certain that's what it is before completing the transaction. The best way to tell is to make sure there is an obvious welded vertical seam on the inside of the drum. Who knows, it could be brass, just highly unlikely.

Hi, thanks for that reply...yes, I am looking for what I used to have, I guess you could say. I appreciate any leads and information you'd offer.

About that snare. I was wondering about that. It COULD be brass but it's not really likely, is it? Darn it. Well, I haven't paid him yet, so I could ask for a picture of the insides.

As far as I know, ebay policy would let me off the hook, if it's NOT "as described".

I'll do as you said, ask for more proof.

Thanks again!

By the way, did you get a reply to your question?

I haven't yet, and I've sent two; one a few minutes ago, and one immediately after the auction ended.

Also, a very nice website you have! I wish I could swing that Beatles kit...what a gem that is!

hi, if the item is not what the seller said it was, then DON'T pay for it.

Even if he leaves negative feedback, you just reply to it saying that it was not as described.

Hi, thanks...yes, that's the way I'd go. I asked for weight of the drum and a pic of the interior seam. No reply as of yet.

The seller does have 100% feedback, and seems like he knows his stuff.

But we'll see.

If that is really brass, is it a pretty good deal?

No, I didn't get a reply...I wrote as soon as the drum was listed. If the drum is brass, I'd say the price is fair considering the condition.

Thanks for checking out the website!

You're welcome, and I book marked it for the future, the bug has bitten and I'll be looking for lots of stuff, I'm sure.

I guess he's busy. He does seem to know what's up, so I don't think he'd intentionally mis-represent the drum....makes this a mystery.

SO, if it's NOT brass, is the price way too high, then?

Thanks for watching my back!

If it's not brass, I would think the drum would be worth somewhere around $275. If it was mint, anywhere from $350 to $500. If it was mint and brass, upwards of $950.

Thanks for that...so, is it a fact that ALL brass shells were welded, and none were seamless? If that is the case, then this isn't brass.

The seller has replied to my questions. Other than seeming slightly annoyed, he seems like a reasonable guy.

He stated that there is NO seam, and sent pictures (attached) showing missing chrome and what appears to be a brass/copper color underneath...which he is taking for a brass shell.

I also asked for a weight, and he said he would try to weigh it tomorrow and get back to me.

I appreciate your help and insights. I'll keep you posted on this.

Mike
