Most vintage MIJ drums are round-overs. The perfectness of the edges and the tuning to the shell's natural timber-pitch is what I believe give the old MIJ drums the resonance that most desire.
I tend to keep them as they were (round-overs) and achieve maximum resonance, then I use Aquarian Studio Rings to warm them up. (AKA Evans E-rings, RemO's tone control rings, or the original Richie Rings)
Precision will do well, though if you want to save a boatload of money - find someone local to do it for you. This is best achieved by taking as many shells to them as possible for one session - (like $100 for about 20 shells or so) They all need inspection at least.
"But how in the world do I find anyone local?" - Call Anderson Trading in Anaheim and ask for some references - they have many customers (all over the US) who are drum builders.
