Taking a conservative approach to all things vintage, I never thought of cutting into the collars. If this doesn't affect equal stretching of the head, that is quite an interesting idea. I love options when I encounter problems and this will be a good one to know about in future projects. Thanks guys. Dean

Try Remo's Classic Fit drum heads. Here's the link to the Remo website for the Classic Fit heads. Scroll down a bit and you'll see that they now offer bass drum heads!https://www.remo.com/products/product/ambassador-coated-classic-fit/-Mark
These heads worked great on my Progressive Jazz kit. I had a 20" Attack head and used it for the bass drum. It spins freely and sounds great!
