I played this 22/12/16/16 a few times before I sold it and loved the WAY it felt!

Hi everyone. This is my first post. I have a set of mint 3-ply 1967 Champagne Ludwigs: 8x12, 9x13, 16x16, 22 kick and a supraphonic snare. Looking to add one more floor tom. Need your opinions on the best next addition to round out the set. Considering 14x14 but hard to find. Would a second 16x16 tuned differently work just as well? Or do you have other size ideas? Naturally I will look to match the year and color. Thanks everyone. Looking forward to your input.

Welcome to the forum! There's no denying that two floor toms are just plain cool! You can't go wrong with dual 16x16 toms. They can definitely be tuned to sound melodically different. Of course, you could go with a 16x18. That baby will boom!

If availability weren't an issue, I'd recommend a 10 and 12 up, 14 and 16 down configuration, but since there are very few 10" 3-ply Ludwig shells, I would recommend what everyone else is saying. Get yourself a second 16" floor tom with a different sweet spot than the one you have right now and you're golden...

I've played two sixteens (or fourteens) on most of my kits. Here's my trick: I use the same batter head, with a clear thin reso head on the first and a thicker on the later.

Tune for the chromatic sweet spot and you have it nailed! Really, the only reason I use the same batter head is aesthetics. If you'e not concerned about the 'look', stick a hydro on the low tom. That will lower (but mellow) the tone even more.
