Need help to identify my drums

Loading...

My Majestics are identical, hardware wise, to these. Blue Sparkle, offset lugs on the toms and bass, same rail set, 20-12-12-14-16 matching wood snare. The 16 was added and everything else came together, although the 14 floor tom is a different series, thinner shell. I love these old mysteries. And I get flamed all the time for my absurd affinity.

Again, thanks to all for the feedback and compliments!

Well ain’t that a kick in the head. For 30 years I thought I was playing a Pearl set with fiberglass shells. Come to find out they’re neither. HAH! I do have a second floor tom that came with the kit. It’s a 16” Ludwig with silver flake that matches very well. It has that typical Ludwig “thud.”

@ Salty Brian. I was told there were from the 60’s, but who knows? Any pics of your set? I don‘t have an extra cymbal arm holder. I THINK I have the piece that fits on top of this one.

@ Vexorgtr. Yes, I’ve always liked the offset lugs!

@ giger.t. and Jonnistix Thanks for the non-fiberglass ID. What kind of wood are these, then?

@ jonnistix: Thank you for the GREAT information. Any pics of your Majestics? The insides have very little cracking, actually; which is impressive since I’m a heavy hitter and these gigged out with me constantly “back in the day” – meaning the 80’s in Boston. Ya know, when I used to be cool. :-) The pinnacle of my illustrious career was when my band opened for Foghat. I’ve been living off the 200 bucks and free skunked beer ever since….

I gotta say, I’ve gotten a lot of good compliments on the sound I get from my now-I-know-what-they-are STAR drums :-). Loud, poppy, with some great resonance. Drove a few sound engineers batty, but only the ones who didn’t know what they were doing. “You gotta deaden those things up, man!” To which I replied, “I’ll deaden YOU up, man!” hahaha

I’ll post pics of the snares in the next couple days or so.

Thanks again!

That's a cool old kit. I love those old MIJ's. They had some very neato hardware and some of the wildest wraps of the day. Sweeeeet old kit.

From Boom King

Greetings all,This is my set that I've been playing for over 30 years. When I bought it, I was told it was a Pearl set from the 60's. I recently sent pictures to Pearl and they told me it's NOT one of theirs. It's made of fiberglass shells (they are LOUD), and there is no badge or identification. The ONLY ID I can find is "Made in Japan" on both Tom holders. The off set lugs are cool and unique, and I'm hoping someone can help identify my kit!Thank you!Rob

Boom King! you're shells are made of lauan plywood (there is plenty of information about it on this site) and yes these are loud, very loud. Mind Blowi

These are my son's, and the WMP are mine. Both are just plain ol' junk MIJ drums....the WMP, no idea whoi actually made them. We think they are Pearl, but there is no way to find the bass drum lugs anywhere on any Pearl drums, stencil or company line, so we just call 'em the WMP. And they boom like none most people have ever heard. Low, thunderous boomers. Every one that plays them comments or asks if I would sell.

Sell? Nah...I'm learning how to play, why would I sell my drums?

I don't have the blue 14 floor tom in these pix, but you get the idea.

This 16 came along later, but it matches well enough. The 14 stays, no matter what happens to the rest of the kit. The blue sparkle is 20-12-12-14-16 and matching snare. The WMP is 22-13-16 and matching woodie and COS Star snare...I love these drums. They are amazing.

Thanks Mcjinic!

Giger.T – Lauan. Cool! That solves THAT mystery :-). Yep, LOUD alright. Drove my parents and neighbors crazy when I was first learning. And I have to say, there must be nothing more annoying to a parent than listening to a beginner drummer. hah! Oh, the agony. Poor mom and dad…

Jonnistix – hey, those are COOOOOL drums! Neat to see the off set lugs and same rail mount. I’m sure you’ve already done this, but have you sent pics to Pearl? They were very good with trying to identify my kit, even though it turned out not to be one of theirs. Love the color on the WMP drums. I’ll bet they ARE boomerlicious.

I’ll never sell mine, either. Eventually I want to get another set to gig out with and keep my Stars at home. Attached are pics of my old snare and my new one. The flash was on to show the aliens, which glow in the dark.

Off to vacation. This is a really cool site!

The WMP, if you notice, have been "upgraded" somewhat...the interiors have a veneer added to them of curly maple. It was a nightmare, but came out very nice. They are the early 60s 3 ply shells. We have found that even Pearl has a hard time identifying the really old stuff from the stencil lines. They tend to deny they were involved in the big time copying of Slingerland and Ludwig hardware.
