I assume this is the drum?: http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Gretsch-Old-Wood-Snare-Drum-Parts-or-Restore_W0QQitemZ230172439032QQihZ013QQcategoryZ38095QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

You didn't keep it long!

It looks nice...

3 extra holes - looks like someone replaced the microsensitive with a Slingerland 3 point strainer. The rims are not die cast, and not original, neither are the tension rods. Nice looking shell though - I bet you make at least $50. If there is a date stamp you may want to include a picture to help the sale.

PM just means Private Message - you can view these by clicking on the link on the right side of the screen.

Yes, that's the drum, but I'm not selling it. I just purchased it a few hours ago. The listing must have been submitted by the gentleman I bought it from. Perhaps he didn't believe that I'd stop by and buy it, as I notified him.

I'm aware that the rims aren't original nor die cast. I do have some original Gretsch die cast rims from another Gretsch snare that I had previously owned. I intend to use those on this drum.

I'm hoping to obtain some advise regarding how I should handle the extra holes in the shell. Should I purchase a microsensitive throw and have a professional "plug" the extra holes, or is there a better way to handle this situation? Was the microsensitive throw the strainer that was originally on this particular model?

In regard to the date stamp, I can make out October and it looks like either 1951, 1956 or 1958. The last digit is what I can't make out clearly. The third digit is definitely a 5 though.

I'm still not sure where to find the private messages. Sorry for my lack of knowledge regarding this issue.

THANKS for all of your help to date and I look forward to being "enlightened" some more. By the way.... I believe the finish is Gretsch's "Midnight Blue Pearl."

Oh cool!!! Glad you got it! He must have scheduled the auction and forgot to cancel it.

You're correct, it's Midnight Blue Pearl. A beauty of a drum, and I'm sure it will turn out to be a winner. Definitely worth more than $100!

It originally came with a Microsensitive strainer, with a long lever. Check out Jim Petty at www.jp2creations.com ...give him a call and he can really help you out. Also, the strainers show up on ebay from time to time.

As for the extra holes...one of them might get covered by a micro replacement. The other two are really not a big deal, but you could get them plugged if you wanted. Good to go with a professional. Some people take "donor" plugs from behind the lugs, but others are against this. Still others look for and use a trashed donor shell with the right wrap. I personally just leave extra strainer holes be...they don't bother me.

For private messages, find where it says W elcome, OldSchool. on the right of the screen. Just under that it should say "Private Messages," and you should be able to click on that link.

Here's my (6 ply) MBP babies:

THANKS AGAIN for the feedback, the information and the great shot of your kit. I love it. It reminds me somewhat of my first Ludwig Kit -- a 1963 Sky Blue Pearl.

I'll be sending you some additional pics of the snare shortly. I guess the thing to do is what until I find a microsensitive strainer and go with that. I'll be open to any and all additional recommendations on this one. Appreciate "the education!"

roscoe: PM your email and I'll forward the pics I took! Thanks!
