Need help identifying the age and model of my drums

Loading...

I have a Ludwig six pc set that I have had since 1991. I sold it around 2000then bought it back in 2006. I restored it because the owner left it in a garage and the wraps were deteriorating. I am trying to nail down the series and year my drums were made. They have the olive and blue badge with serial numbers. I know they were made in the 70's. I think they are the Pro-Beat series but I'm not completely sure. Here are the sizes. Supra-phonic snare 5x14, 16x24 bass, 9x13 and 10x14 mounted toms, two 16x16 floor toms. I have attached a few pics from before the restoration. I have several more pics. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bryan

Welcome!

Are the shells matched? One tom looks like it may be a 3 ply shell, while the others appear to be 6. Can you verify whether they are all matching shells. Also, are all seams riveted? That is another question as they don't seem to be.

I am not 100% sure that the shells all match. Here are a few more pics when I had them stripped down. I assumed that they did as they all had the same type of badge. Which one looks 3 ply? They are set up at my church so I will check tomorrow. The 14" tom had rivets as you can see in the pic before I stripped them. The others did not.

Thanks,

Bryan

Those are all 6-ply drums, no 3-plys there.....looking at the badges in previous pics...I'd say somewhere between 1977 and 1979. Hard to tell for sure without seeing all the serial numbers.

My dad bought these for me used in '91 when I was in high school. He was told that it was the same kit that was used on the Johnny Carson show. I did a little research and found this pic of Buddy Rich's set in a Ludwig catalog. The specs match the size and original color of my original set. The 14" tom may have been added which is possible due to the rivets. Here is a link to the pic of the BR set. You can also see in the original pic of my bass drum there are four holes on top, slightly off center. That would be where the mounted tom originally was. Apparently someone added the center mount. The bass drum also originally had the cymbal mounts as the pic in this link.

Sorry, one bad eye. It just looked as though one of the pix the tom had a re-ring in it. My poor eyesight is all.
