Need Help Identifying Clamp Last viewed: 13 hours ago

I've been doing some research on Michael Giles's drum kit during his time with King Crimson (1969) and need help in identifying a clamp of an unknown make. At this point, I've established that he played a Ludwig Blue Note, although there were a few changes from the configuration listed in the 1967 catalogs (the most notable being the swapping out of the seat case with a porto-seat, and the wooden snare with a supra-phonic).

Due to the height limitation of the BD cymbal mount near the hi-hat, an extension was assembled from (what I suspect to be) a leg from the unused 16 x 18" floor tom and a clamp connecting one half of the mount with the other. Since there was some added Ludwig hardware, one would assume that this clamp was their doing, but I don't see a similar part in the 1967 catalogs.

Interestingly enough, it appears Ludwig made something like this recently, the Modular Adapter Clamp, but whether or not an earlier version existed I don't know. The only other conclusion I can arrive to is that this wasn't a Ludwig part or wasn't even made by a drum company but originally intended for some other purpose.

Any ideas?

After doing some digging, I suspect that a tom-tom hoop mount was used, but it would have had a slot for one of the two 9.5mm rods, and the ability to accommodate the parallel placement of the rods (as seen in the picture). It couldn't have been Ludwig's "clipper" mount, so it must have been another make. This supposed Slingerland mount on eBay is a little closer to what I've described, though it looks like it was assembled from different parts.

Well, the one mentioned here (which last appeared in the 1967 catalog) only resembles half of it.

I finally figured out what it was: not an actual clamp, but parts from Ludwig's newer double tom mount (released in 1968?) screwed together. The attached picture gives a better view.

Bingo. Hal Blaine's monster set used the same component extensively in constructing his rolling tom racks. He also used them to connect a support brace from his rail mount on the player's left side of the BD across to the extra tall BD-mounted cymbal arm on the right.

I can't see it all that well in your picture but to me it looks like it is the top section of a Ludwig shell mount cymbal holder, riding on a 3/8ths" rod of indeterminate origin (cut down floor tom leg possibly) which is clamped to a Ludwig Standard line single tom holder.

Although I'm not 100% certain I'm even looking at the right part you're trying to identify.
