Need Drum Head Advice

Loading...

One of my projects for the spring is to finally build out my MIJ drums that I've been assembling for the last six months. These are mostly sixties era 3 ply Majestics and early 70's Crowns or no name Stars (I think), plus a couple early CB700 small concert toms.

Anyhow, I'm looking for a certain very specific sound. Back in 70's I had a set of small R Rodgers with one additional drum that was a no name MIJ 14 inch floor tom I had mounted as a rack tom. It was the best sounding drum on the kit, although in those days I really didn't know a damn thing about proper tuning. But it was very different from the Rodgers drums. They had a bright and projective sound by comparison, a little like Keith Moons drums of the early 70's. This other drum had a much darker, boomier and more resonant tone, more like Ringos drums from the early 60's. That is the sound I am going for on this kit.

Anyway I'm planning on using Diplomats on the bottom heads, but not sure what to use on the top. I thought about pinstripes, but I think they kill a little too much ring and projection. Anybody have a suggestion?

Aquarian Texture Coated, batter and reso.

I think you'll find the Diplomat counter-productive to the sound you wish to achieve.

The collar on the Aquarian TCs are tailor-made to fit the sometimes uneven/rough bearing edges on MIJ kits.

You might be right about the diplomats, but I'm not sure I agree on the coated heads. I used those back in the day, never liked them, too ringy and they kill sustain, what I'm looking for is long and boomy, not short and ringy. Also all my drums will be getting brand new bearing edges, so I'm not worried about uneven surfacing as much.

Denser wood has a higher natural resonant frequency, than the softer more fibrous woods. It does make some of the MIJ shells , capable of the tone you are looking for, in the toms. I don't see why properly tuned clear Diplomats wouldn't do the job on the bottom.Their lower mass will mean a more open sound. As for the batter side, I have found the clear pinstripe(Remo Encore or Remo ) about the best heads to get the depth but not the sustain. It seems that the second ply dampens the head a little. Better to go with a heavier single ply------Ambassador X is is the thickest single ply Remo makes----I don't know about others.

The edges and the insides will effect sound. A sharp(er) bearing edge will give you more attack and less resonance, where a rounded edge will give you a more boom and resonance. Unfinished interiors will produce a soft mellow tone and finished (painted, varnished, etc) will give a sharper tone. Wood density comes into play too as mentioned, tight grain (birch, maple) more attack, higher tone. Wood like mahogany (loose grain) is mellow.

If you have a kit made of various wood shells, different bearing edges and finished/unfinished interiors, it will be a bit difficult to get to sound ... even and melodic.

I'd make sure all the edges are the same or cut to what you're looking for. Finish (more coats for the less dense woods) or strip the insides of the dense woods.

It's going to be frustrating. One type of head may not solve the issues.

My 2 cents.
