need advice selling music equipment

please let me explain...bare with me , this is gonna be long.

2 yrs ago my uncle alan had a massive stroke. it took him out of playing music (drums) and teaching high school math. he was a very well loved and respected math teacher for two generations. he unwillingly had to retire at the beginning of this school year. he has played drums for as long as i can remember, been in many bands from grade school band to screamin rock n roll. for the past 20 yrs alan has been the main supplier of equipment in the last 3 bands we participated in together along wth my younger brother who plays 5 string bass. uncle alan has decided to sell all this equipment, there is alot and all in VERY good condition. he has enough sound equip. to run 3 bands on different stages at the same time. he also has the van and trailor to haul all this stuff in which is for sell too. he is keeping his main drum kit, i am buying his secondary kit and he has a electric kit. the electric kit is for sell, 1800$ i think.

anyway, alan has asked me to help him sell. not real coasher about this, i'm not ready to quit making music with my uncle yet, but he has given up on ever being able to play again, so what i want wont happen. i keep hoping (praying) tho.

anyway... so where do i start with this? where do i sell? what would you guys do?

i want to make fair deals for both seller and buyer. would it do any good to list any of it here? need your help here guys. any advise will be appreciated. thanks for reading my storie and look forward to reading your opinions.

Hey Robyn

First off I'm sorry to hear about your uncle. It's sad to hear of bad things with good people. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you'll play music with him again. Anything can happen. So keep your hope and his spirits up!

As to selling. There are plenty of people that buy and sell here. If you want it to go to other musicians who will use and care for it, here is a good place to start. For top dollar on anything, eBay is the way to go. my suggestion is to give us a list here and things might get sold fast and easy. If not move on to eBay where there are fees and stuff to worry about. Take pics and ask questions here. There are plenty of honest and knowledgable people who will help out.

Take care. Shawn

+1 Everything, Bigshawn said.

Put up a list in the for sale section robyn. I'll be happy to help in any way, just pm me any questions you may have. You'll probably sell 'some stuff' here real quick and then have some stuff that will have to go to ebay. Let the buyers sort it out for you. With their purchases, they'll tell you which is which.

So sorry to hear about your uncle. Hope you get to play some music with him even if just one more time.

Go for it! Here if you need me...

Stay wiggly!

John

Don't forget Craigslist. No fees and I have found an immense amount of excellent drums off this site...only problem is making contact. And that's when replying to an ad. Absolutely throw a Craigslist ad up in addition to anything else you do. How many Craigslist ads have you seen posted on this site?

You may not get top dollar but Music Go Round and Guitar Center buy gear.

I have no experience with either other than a couple very small items which I traded,,,

Robyn Im sure you know this but I would use ebay to get an idea what things are selling for. Search your item, then on the left side of the screen you will see some search options. Scroll down and under the "show only" catagory, select completed listings. The items that have sold are shown in green. Now you will see what people have actually paid for the item and will give you an idea of its worth. Another way would have someone from a band that you know and trust come over and look at the gear and give their appraisal. Once you know what the stuff is worth then I would try Craigs List first (as allready suggested). Ebay is a pain, the shipping and the paypal is a headache. Just make sure you mark your price up enough so that you can let the buyer talk you down, it makes them feel like they "did good". Dont mark it up too high eiather, you want them to amswer the add. Be patient, it will take some time moving everything. I would not take anything to a retail store like Guitar Center or Music go round unless you need the money really bad right now. They are retail stores and will pay 50% of its worth. I took a bunch of stuff to music go round once because I just wanted to unload it. The store clerks used ebay to put a value on my stuff!

Listing here on VDF is a good idea also but you will have to pack and ship it, and were talking pretty big items here like PA speakers, monitors and amps.

Start with Ebay, get a value, then list them on Craigs list or the news paper or post up some for sale signs on the bulliton boards in music stores. Bottom line is, avoid shipping and ecxepting payment from a stranger over the internet. With any luck you might find a new band starting out and sell them most of the gear as a package.

Good luck, hope this helps you in some way, shape or form. And happy holidays!

first of all...thanks for the good wishes for my uncle, i've wanted to share his story with you guys for a while but wasn't sure how to put it all in words. his stroke has been very devastating to our family in many ways. in a way we are all recovering from it in our own way. i know its been really heavy on me. uncle alan isn't just my uncle. anyway.....

also thanks for the ideas and offers of help, i will most likely be calling on you guys. i'll get a list going and get it posted. might take a few days but i will get it up. i kinda know some of the stuff he has but not sure of model names and stuff like that. some of the brands are Peavy, Fender, Berhinger and yamaha i think. it is all used but still has lots of life left in them. ok thanks again guys. keep your eyes open for a big sale coming soon.

Sorry about your Uncle. That is a day we all regret arriving at ourselves. If you think he will be ok with it, involve him with sorting and establishing value of the items.

Pictures are your best helper with online selling. The more the better.

As mentioned, check with band mates to see if anyone wants the stuff. You Uncle might have an easier time if he knows the stuff will be used by friends rather than strangers. Just make sure you friend doesn't try to flip it and your Uncle doesn't find out.

Good luck with everything.

Nothing really magical about selling off musical gear. It is like selling something you are very familiar with, except for the "knowing what it is worth" part. Completed EBAY auctions reveal the going values, and then advertise on all the globally realized places like ebay, craiglist, and item-specific forums. I wouldn't fret too much over the "not knowing about the item" part of it. Any interested buyer will know full well what it is, and you just have to convince him/her they aren't telling you anything you didn't already know, during the negotiations........lol
