Need a little help

I have a 1968 Ludwig gold sparkle Hollywood set that, for a variety of reasons, it is time to part with. As I started to research how and where to sell it I came across this site. Being vintage myself I didn't necessarily think of the set as vintage, but alas as it is now an almost 51 year old set I suppose it is. I haven't played this set for over 10 years, and it's always been stored in air conditioned/heated spaces.

I am the second owner, and my parents bought it for me around 1975, near as I can remember. It was purchased from family friends, so I vaguely knew the original owner. The drums have been together as a set since the beginning, and while not perfect, they are in as good a condition as any set of that age that I've seen in my short time browsing this forum. Of course, I'm not biased at all.

The bass drum is the only drum with a legible date stamp of Feb 21, 1968. The snare has a date stamp, but it's not legible, and the toms do not have a stamp on the inside that I could find. The bass drum does have about a 1/4" drilled hole on the bottom. I'm guessing the original owner put a mic inside and ran a mic wire? One of the hoops was cracked when I bought it, so that was replaced in the late 70s. The bass drum hoops are a bit dinged up, but other than that the drums are absolutely gorgeous. Again, not biased at all.

Deciphering the cymbals seems to be difficult, but after much reading I think the 22" Zildjian ride cymbal has a hollow block stamp (large stamp type 1) from the 1950's, and the 14" Zildjian hi-hat has a small stamp A, also from the 1950's. This fits with the original owner telling me he had replaced the original cymbals with "really nice used ones". OK, maybe not a direct quote, but something like that. I added the 16" Zildjian crash cymbal in the late 1990's.

I have the original throne, which doesn't look the greatest but it's still solid (I'm not light). The rest of the hardware was all replaced in the late 80's with Gibraltar.

Here is a link to lots of detailed pictures.

I would appreciate your help in determining the value of this set. Obviously I'd like to get as much as I can, but at the same time I don't want to be unreasonable. Any help is greatly appreciated!

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Beautiful set of drums. Looks like they have really been taken care of over the years. Sometimes, but not all the time, you can find someone looking for a complete package like yours. Others would prefer to buy all the drums including the snare together or the Gold Sparkle all together. If they all came together, I would keep them that way. Certainly have some value in the 22 Block Stamp and the hats as well. I'll let some of the others put some numbers out there for you. But I will say that you have some very nice items that would add up quickly. Finding the correct avenue for you to sell them will be a key aspect in maximizing your dollars.

Nice looking kit. The snare drum should bring a premium. Check out ebay's sold items for pricing.

Just guessing here- snare drum $350, maybe more.

The 4 piece drums $800 - $1100.

No guesses on the cymbals and hardware. Again, ebay is a great source for market pricing.

Folks over on cymbalholic.com might be able to give you an indication of value on the 22" ride and hats. If you have weights for each, all the better. Beautiful drums! I'd break things up and sell seperately (4-piece shell pack, snare, individual cymbals, hardware) to get the most value. Best of luck with the sale.

No need to call in at Cymbalholic. We make house calls.

22" Large Stamp Type I (LS1): Expected median price $243 with half selling for between $189 and $293 n=75

14" Small Stamp (SSA) hats: Expected median price $191 with half selling for between $127 and $229 n=29

16" Thin Crash Brilliant (IF = 1996) Expected median price for under 1100g: $99 with half selling for between $72 and $109 n=23

These prices are as at end of 2017. It will take a month or so before I update everything to include sales to the end of 2018. Those expected prices are not taking condition into account. Since your ride and hats look to be in excellent condition I'd expect the price to be a little above the median expected value. More copmlete info is available through the links in my signature.

Thanks for your response! Are you the author of black.net.nz? What a great resource. If that is you thanks for all the effort you put in. While I saw the ranges I don't really have the experience to know if these cymbals are average, above, or below. I think of them as above, but I'm kind of biased.

Thanks again for the house call!

Yes that's my site. Thanks for your thanks. It's a bit of a retirement hobby. I'm always glad when it is helpful rather than overwhelming for people to use. I'm always wanting to go back and redo the organization to make it easier to find things.

The condition scale is one of the areas I still need to tame with better examples. There is something hidden away on a back page about different levels of wear on mounting holes (keyhole), but I have yet to get a nice overview of how to assess overall condition with examples. Some day...

From Mo Tonkie

Hello FormerDrummer...and Welcome to the forum! I feel that Mo Tonkie is pretty close with his price estimates. I was also thinking about $1500 for the 5 piece kit. In the world of vintage drums, condition is everything. Your drums are incredibly clean, with the gold sparkle wrap still shining like new! I looked at all your pictures and really can't find too much to complain about. Yes, the bass drum has a small hole, but it's at the bottom and really shouldn't affect value too much. All the white Resocoat interiors look shiny white! What I did find interesting were the muffler knobs Ludwig used. These are the knobs that you see on 60's Acrolites and the Standard series of drums. Ludwig was using the larger round-knob control for their Classic series of drums and the Supraphonic around 1968 and on. My guess is that there was a shortage of these knobs and the factory worker used the other knob to keep production going.

You already have excellent information from Zenstat on the cymbals. My advice would be to sell the 5 drums together and not include the cymbals or stands. The stands aren't Ludwig anyway. Cymbals are such a personal thing, that it makes more sense to offer them separately.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do!

-Mark
