Need a bit of free advice on playing out PLEASE.. Last viewed: 13 hours ago

So while I have collected a few drums for sometime now and really enjoy banging around in the basement... occasional open jamming with my son on guitar I have never played out... at least not since Jr. High band.

So recently I have been asked to come play trap set with some guys who put together a band. I have put them off a few times and let them know I'm just a basement hack.... but they kept asking and I have to decided to give it a try.

So what advice can anybody give me... just curious.

Thanks Help2

Have fun, play what you know, listen to the other guys, enjoy the opportunity to play with other musicians.

Did I mention, have fun!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Jim, music is a conservation between other people and your instrument or voice. you will grow and improve drastically if you play with other people, another good outlet is to play at jam night of any clubs near you that may have them. Give it a go you only live once !

Take it as a compliment that they sought you out. You (and hopefully they) will want to get a few rehearsals in before gigging.

Use that to form your arrangements and learn the ins and outs of each others' playing. It's not necessary—and it's unrealistic—to have letter-perfect versions of each song. If everyone is in tune and on key and the tempos are suitable for dancing, you should do just fine.

On the gig, keep your eyes and ears open. Look at your bandmates and the audience, not your drums. And if you're setting the opening tempo for a song, bear in mind that adrenaline may get the best of you. I've found that if it feels too slow, it's usually just right.

As above, the most important thing is to have fun.

Thanks all... so play simply... breathe... watch... listen... control the butterflies (oh and the tempo to)... practice... smile... don't apologize and have fun.

Got it. I am too old to be this nervous about something.:o

Before the show, after the show....... watch your stuff on the load in, load out. Gear does disappear. Sometimes while you are standing next to it.

Everything has been good advice.

Ploughman.. good advice! I was taking my Towers.. maybe I rethink that.. I love that little kit but if anything happened I could never replace it.

I could build an orphan kit... (but it would not be a 20-14-12) maybe that is smarter. I got a cocktail drum I could put together. Hmmmm
