NDD: New Drumset Day

Yeah, I read that in the sellers ad.I find it hard to believe that a company with such a fine reputation as Gretsch could have had that sort of a problem, and it apparently went on like that for years! Heck, even cheapo MIJs didn't suffer from problems as basic as getting the shell sizes accurate.

Don't kid yourself. I can tell you with confidence that Gretsch quality control was not always spot on. Old Gretsch guitars for instance, were simply not that well made to start with. Today, most of them need neck resets, the binding they put on the bodies and necks tends to disintegrate, and the electronics were pretty crappy at times too. They just weren't very good guitars. Obviously, they had tolerance issues also on the drums. I'm just not a fan of anything made by Gretsch, although I have tried. Repeatedly.

Keep in mind that Gretsch and all the other MI companies were producing instruments in record numbers in the mid-60's after The Beatles hit, so QC was bound to nosedive a bit here and there.

The guitars made by Gretsch these days in the Terada factory in Japan, are the best ones they've ever made, period. I have no idea if current Gretsch drums are equally well made.

Just for the record, the Gretsch and Slingerland sets were sold this past weekend, and I picked up the Tama kit today. He still has the gold Ludwig Standards for sale.

I see you didn't waste anytime adding your new Tama set to your already impressive list of kits!

It's cool that after all your years of playing, you still get excited about a new kit!Yes Sir

I'm looking at them now. The white satin flame looks great. I have never had a satin flame set in all my years. The older ones are always beat up, it seems.

I have to get the bass drum dampened properly. He had a pillow inside for the front head, but it's made for 14" deep drums, and this BD is 16" deep, so I'll have to cut a felt strip for the back head for now, unless I have an old Evans EMAD lying around.

I have decided to donate the red sparkle MIJ set to charity, so that's in the works. I'd rather give them to kids to bang around on.
