Mystery wraps

Loading...

I have several sheets of plastic wrap that are unusual. I bought them from ebay auction as "drum wraps from an old mansion " in Cincy. They are thin and brittle, have faded on some pieces, some have small, odd geometric shapes missing. Some look like vintage wraps I've seen, others nope. Maybe these are for dashboards? The sheets are small, I might be able to make 2 small snares without piecing sections.

Do these look familair? thanks,

larry

These are my guesses:

#1 looks like Peacock Pearl from the 1936 Slingerland catalog

#2 looks like Gold or Yellow Satin Flame

#3 reminds me of a color DW offered a while back

#4 I've seen it somewhere but can't remember

#5 looks like Lavender Pearl from the early '30s Ludwig catalogs

However, I don't believe the wraps that Ludwig and Slingerland were using in the 30s were thin. My experience with that era is very limited so I may be very wrong.

You have my :2Cents:.

Thanks. Maybe my "thin" is really thicker than I realize. The wrinkles in 1 wrap would have to be worked to smooth out. The wraps are semi-transparent, I wonder which stains or paints under wrap Might look best.

I guess it's endless possiblities. I'll listen to them all...

thanks

I've heard and seen wraps with white and black backing depending on the color of the wrap. I've seen POP that was clear and you could see throught to the shell's outer ply, which is really neat. Like you said, endless possibilities. Do your wraps have a solid color backing or not?

No solid backing; transparent. The wraps have some strange colors. Pic#2 is a yw/gr with red and green spots. pic#3 is pinkish with some blue. I think a lighter background might be best. The contact cement might affect coloring too. Did I mention I've never done a full wrap? ( just re-gluing, patching.

My art skills have come in handy on fixing divits in wraps, etc. )

I've never done any rewrapping. I will be in the not-too-distant future, though. See if you can find a clear-drying adhesive, I'm sure they're out there. There are some pretty experienced "wrappers" on the forum, so I'm sure you'll get some advice from some good folks that can be of more assistance than I can.

Good luck with it! They look pretty nice! Is there enough of them to wrap whole kits?

there's barely enough for snares, most will have to be peiced together. these are remnants, but I might be able to do a narrow bass drm ( scots) with one. most are around 4" x 32". piccalloe snares with tubelugs...vintage shells or new...stay tuned. I'll be like a clown on the highwire...something to shake your heads at, but, I just might pull it off!

Drums were not the only market for wrap. Seldom did a drum maker specify a unique design that was proprietary. The wrap maker kicked out some patterns, offered samples to the companies and waited for orders. Usually , there would be multiple orders for the same thing, sometimes , only one company would order and sometimes , no-one would order( man , that is a rare wrap! do you know who used that?--- answer----nobody). If there were multiple orders, then the price would reflect the production run, one order would mean , more Dineros. Occasionally , a company would ask for a custom design, even more Dineros.

Wraps are also used by other musical instrument makers; Accordian makers, stringed instrument makers as well as Sign Makers,Industrial Designers, Decorators , Hairdressers,Shoemakers, Women's Foundation Garment Designers and Lunchpails .

Your pieces could be from anything. I once ran across an Upholsterer, that had wrap set aside for covering hard panels in certain pieces of upholstered furniture. One can easily see the application in an upholstered Diner booth, or women's undergarments---- W.M.P. Necklace for a bra or Cherry Ripple for a pair of underpants?

Speaking of cherry ripple... I think #2 above is some sort of gold ripple wrap that I've seen somewhere...
