Mystery tom - help!!

Loading...

From brody

This just gets stranger! Took the contact paper off the tom fully, and was met with black paint and a lot of glue. The paint was covering a wrap. The actually wrap is visible in a few places, most obviously at the point where it meets. (see pic). Does this shed any light on the identity of the tom? I've included a couple of interior shots too.

Japanese stencil kit tom....thats what it looks like to me....shell is luan aka phillipine mahogany...not a quality drum.

First thought that jumped into my head too...super-thin shell, luan-ish interior, poor edges....

I mean, it could be a very, very early Yamaha I guess...but I dunno if they ever made thin shells with no re-rings...

Yeah, it didn't look too clever! Thing is, I love that weird wrap! Don't know if it's worth spending the time getting the paint off. Suppose I could use it for spares – the dampner I could plunder for an Ajax snare I have that needs one - it's the same fitting.

I agree with you, it's a cool wrap...one of the more unusual Japanese ones.

I think, ultimately, if you wanted to, it could be a cool renovated tom...but...I doubt you'd ever find its matching partners.

The more I look at the shell, the more I think it may actually be a thin Japanese maple shell...they DID make those too...I come across one every once in a while.

That wrap is a dead ringer for a Ludwig Strata wrap. Obviously, there's no way that's a Ludwig shell, but the wrap is very similar to a Strata.Burger Kin
