Mystery M.I.J. Kit. Please help I.D.

Loading...

These were for sale down my street for $40.00 and I could not resist. It's a 12 inch tom and 20 inch kick that are M.I.J. in Red Sparkle. There are no badges on em and I was wondering if anyone had a clue what they were. Interiors are really pretty for an M.I.J. and much darker than other I have come across. Also came with a 13 inch KENT tom. Also what is the likely hood of ever finding a matching floor to go with this old M.I.J.?

Here is the 12 inch rack:

Is that an 18" kick?

Hey Ska:

For $40 you did VERY well. Good job! You'll be able to find a matching floor tom and snare with very little problem. Red and Blue sparkle were the most made wraps on MIJ drums. good luck!

Thanks Retrosonic! Any idea of the maker?

The kick drum is actually 20 inch Drew. I thought it might be an 18 as well with the 6 lugs.

Looks like those are Pearl made. 3 ply with re-rings. Those will sound GREAT - plenty of low end. Knock them to get the natural pitch of the shell and tune your heads to that note - and they will sing sing sing. Muffle as you wish and you will be VERY pleased with the result. Of course, bad edges will sabotage that, but hopefully that goes without saying.

You could sell that Kent and use the money from that sale for a FT (or perhaps make a trade) as those Kents are quite collectible in their own right. I understand the appeal of those Kents are not that they are great drums - but that they just have some strange cult following - sorta like Majestics or Crowns IMHO.

Other members will jump in and give more details before you wake up tomorrow morning. Wake up early so you have time to check out this page before you leave for work!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Thanks John! I was actually thinking the same thing about the Kent Tom. Would love to swap that sucker for a nice floor tom to go with this old M.I.J. Would these drums be later 60's or 70's with that hardware on the kick? I already gave em a couple knocks as is with the old heads and they do sound really beefy and warm.

Yes John is right. The set is made by Pearl, the tom mount, lug's ete tell me this. Also the backing plates on the mounts Pearl was the only one that used them in about 1966-68..

One thing that is new to me that i have not seen before is that the "L" arm cymbal mount is mounted with screws from the out side and that the mount is wide and is one piece with wings.

All of the "L" arm mounts that i have seen on these un-badge Pearl made sets were mounted with two screws from the inside of the shell..

Not like your bass drum that has the mounting screws on the outside and 4 of them at that...Mikey

Thanks for chiming in Mikey! So by saying un-badged do you believe these drums never had badges? Did Pearl actually produce totally generic un-badged kits?

Thanks again for the info.

Yes, both Star and Pearl made unbadged generics. They abound in the upper mid-west, mostly.
