Mystery FT - Slingerland or MIJ?

Loading...

I recently acquired this 16 inch FT as part of a deal. It has been painted red, though obviously was wrapped in a satin wrap (texture and swirly reflections). Please see the attached pics and try to help me determine if this is a Slingerland or an MIJ copy. The shell appears to be Slingerland to me, though some of the hardware suggests MIJ (like the rim - as I think genuine Slingerland Slick Savers had a more gradual slanted curve to them)???

Also in question are the leg mounts - which appear to be Slingerland, though I am not sure Slingerland ever used arms as opposed to T bolts.

Also see the lugs - which, by the way - (at least) the inserts on the bottom lugs appear to be MIJ as a Star lug fit it.

My guess so far is a very good Slingerland MIJ copy - but the shell does not make too much sense as the wood looks more like Slinger Maple than MIJ Luan. Every once in a while, we will run into a genuine MIJ drum without the verticle grain luan (more common in BDs).

The badge is gone, but it evidently was the oval shape (which suggests Apollo?)

Could it be a Slinger shell and MIJ hardware??

John

The shell and lug screws/washers look Slingerland. If the lugs have 2 nubs that locate the lugs into the shell I'd say Slingerland. The MIJ copy lugs don't have the nubs and are flat. Hopefully someone can confirm for you!

Yes - the lugs do have the nubs - and heavier than the MIJs. Perhaps someone swapped out the inserts for the tension rods they had?

Could someone confirm for me about the legs and leg mounts. These legs appear to be 60s. Did Slingerland ever use these arms instead of the T bolts? Could they just be replacements? These legs appear to be genuine Slinger (I have researched that) - just not sure when that dates them to (at least the legs). Perhaps the wrap would date it as well - Satin for sure, just not sure what color. I could start removing some red paint if needed - but may not be needed.

Um.....that begs the question.....as I don't happen to know that year. Probably starts with a 1 9 and 6 right?

It's no mystery:

It's either a Leedy floor tom manufactured in the 1960's during the period Slingerland acquired Leedy, retrofitted with Slingerland lugs, or a Slingerland floor tom with later retrofitted Slinger-Leedy floor tom leg castings. Those "L" screws on the leg castings are the evidence for being Leedy, while the Sound King lugs give evidence for it being a Slingerland drum! Both brands shared the same model Slingerland "Rimshot" counter hoops and 3-ply maple shells, and both brands used oval badges. Any way you look at it it's a quality drum!

Thanks Buckie for the great glowing summary!

That being said - I honestly have no need for this particular drum. I could use some of the parts, but then it would spoil it for the next owner - so selling it as is. I will let you remove some red paint to discover the wrap and decide what to do (unless a prospective buyer wants to know what exact wrap it is...let me know).....so

Up for sale.....see FS section for more details.

BTW - any more details are still very much welcomed - like what year it may be (or at least what year the parts might be).

Thanks,

John
