Mysterious WFL Last viewed: 1 minute ago

I promise to stop with "Mysterious XXXX" now... But, in the last of my three part series, I offer up this little gem. Now, before I hear the cries about my hillbilly/DIY paint-job on this, bear in mind that it had been spray painted flat black (hardware and all) by it's previous owner, and I had fully intended to make it into a silver-sparkle, covered drum (and re-do the plating) before discovering that it was, in fact, a Blue/silver duco underneath, and that I'd never get heads on it with a wrap. AND, that the cost to re-nickel the hardware was more than the value of the drum... So, I polished up this **** as best I could to make it a "player". What I'm curious about, is why it DOESN'T have triple-flanged hoops; I thought that was the hallmark of WFL pretty much from the beginning. Now, to be fair, this drum is all nickel (no chrome), and seems to pretty much match from top to bottom, but could it have the wrong hoops on it, or are there WFL's with double flanged hoops out there??? Oh yeah, it's a 7x14", and it also has NO muffler, but does have two mystery holes visible in the pics. Three-ply shell with Mahogany inner. And it's missing the badge... Best guess is something early post-war (like 1946-7). Thoughts???

Those rims are totally original and that drum in my guess is prob around 1940 or so. I don't know why but there were lots of WFL snares that did not fit a catalog description. I had a black/gold/black set with a snare identical to this. After WWII I'm not sure they used these lugs again as they kept Zephyr lugs for about a year before coming out with the classic lug. They almost went under because of WWII so I can't see them making the p-90 lugs like the ones on your snare though I could be wrong about that.

I would bet you could do a thin WMP or something on that and it would look ok if you wanted a wrap.

Thanks for the reply. Glad to hear those are the right hoops. I would not quibble with your 1940-ish estimate. I do wonder about the two extra holes, though... Could it have had a heater in it? I plan to play it as-is for awhile and see what I think. I've heard these WFL shells are supposed to sound great.
