I was inspired by VDF members to save this shell more than restore it. I bought it about a year ago on the cheap not sure what I would do with it, until I saw some of the fine work done here with flaked and pitted Supras. Purdie Shuffle comes to mind with a beautifully polished shell. I don't really have the means to do much so I asked the Maintenance manager at my job if he could sand blast the chrome off. Something was wrong with the sand blaster so he got the paint dept to sand off as much as possible. I used bondo to fill in some minor depressions and pits. Then I primered and painted it using rattle can and sealed it with lacquer. A family friend painted a wood shell for me earlier so I asked her if she could do something with this shell. I gave her my Ludwig book with a couple of pages bookmarked and off she went. You can see the results but most importantly, the snare sounds great. I put it back together with spare parts and new parts. The only original piece is the badge.

The final build and the wood shell Tiffany painted earlier.
Very nice..
Tiffany does good work too...
That looks SUPER!!! Wow! Very nice man!
Great job! Do you think the tube lugs affected the tone of the drum at all?
Just curious (but I realize the bondo and paint may have a greater impact as I think about it...)

Man, those chrome tubes look great with the brass. Bravo.

Thanks guys. Yes, I think the tube lugs probably did focus the sound a bit. I used very little bondo, but lots of paint. I'm sure it all works towards a more focused sound. It's actually Gold rattle can paint with gold hand painted florettes and several coats of clear lacquer over all of it. It was a fun project to do and I feel good about reusing an old beat up shell. . . James
It not only looks GREAT, you get big points for creativity! Love the way it came out. One-of-a-kind!
Nice job...
