My New (to me) Big R Dynasonic

Loading...

Hey fellow drummers, just got this baby all cleaned and put back together, from an earlier post I said I would post some pictures once I was done. Set up the snare according to TommyP's article, and it sounds beautiful. Very full sounding, not as bright and tight as I thought a 5 incher would, thanks TommyP!!!

One thing if you fellow Dyna guys could help me. Is it common for the snare bed to move easily by pushing with a finger?? Mine moves easily, but I don't want to crank it and choke it too much, any help would be appreciated.

Here's the pics!!

Nice score. And yes, it is loose. Supposed to be loose. Thats one of the beauties of the Dynasonic. It is also what makes it so sensitive.

Hey backbeatkeeper!

FINE job on the restoration! The drum looks fabulous! Glad my tutorial on the "Setting up of a Rogers Dynasonic" got you in the proper area. THANKS! And I'd like to add this:

That is only a starting point to get the drum in a nice sounding area WITHOUT a lot of snare rattle/buzz. Tension/tuning from here on can be tweaked to personal taste. I have all my Dynasonics set up pretty tight/crisp, but they all retain a lot of body/fullness. Just beautiful snare drums once you understand them! Also,

What you mean is should the "Snare Frame" be loose when the throw-off is engaged... and yes, it should! If you CAN'T move that frame gently from side to side, it's pulled up too tight... but of course there are differing levels of "too tight". You would know if it were getting pulled up to tight as the drum will start to choke. Funny thing about that though:

A LOT of guys never took the time, or had the patience to PROPERLY set up their Dynasonic snare drums, so of course they sounded like garbage. The fix? Pull the snares up SO TIGHT that the soft COB shell would DENT right behind the throw-off! When checking out a COB Dynasonic, always have a look right behind the throw where it mounts to the shell... in a LOT of cases it will be dented, and this was the main culprit! Goes without saying that it wasn't a problem on the wood model! Anyway,

ENJOY the drum! And don't be afraid to play with the tension/tuning to get it where YOU want to hear it!

Thanks again for the words of encouragement and advice, looks like that's another beverage that I am endebtted to you. After I took the pictures, I noticed that I missed a small piece that is on the outside of the drum for the muffler and had to take the top head off and remount. After that I tuned a little higher and got that "Scarecrow" sound I was looking for. Now all I have to do is find a larger case.

Next project is my 1951 Radio King snare and kit. Total restoration.

Also just a personal plug, I'm selling a 5 x 14 Supraphonic on Ebay, with very low serial number ( 5 digit ) in excellent shape, along with some misc. parts.

My name is the same on Ebay.
