My New "Vintage" Downbeat kit!

From tnsquint

Very nice! What were the issues with the bearing edges?

Where do I begin?!! With all due respect to Ludwig, they need to spend just a bit more time with bearing edges on the Legacy and Classic Maple kits. These are high-end, custom ordered drums. Wood working, especially in the drum world, is at a point where there's no excuse for anything less than perfect! Upon receiving my drums, and marveling at how beautiful they looked, I then pulled all the heads and brought all the shells to Chris Heuer for inspection. Chris owns Heuer's Drum Lab in Burbank http://heuersdrumlab.com and has a milled granite table for cutting edges and checking the level of edges. Chris could only laugh and shake his head with both toms and snare drum. He's seen this time and time again and just can't believe that these drum companies can't get level edges! Ludwig wanted me to send the entire kit back, but I refused, saying that I didn't feel comfortable with the work performed by Ludwig's "craftsmen". I struck a deal with Ludwig and had Chris do the work. To look at the edges, you'd never know they are not factory original... except they are now perfectly level! Chris felt that the bass drum edges were close enough, considering that I would be using muffler straps on both heads.

As to the snare drum, the beds where so WIDE and DEEP that the drum sounded bad! The shell was actually deep enough that after Chris finished with the bottom end, the depth was still at 5". My "Jazz Festival clone" is now better than what comes from Ludwig. Sorry Ludwig, but I have to be honest!

It took quite some time to get all the details completed, but this is now a near perfect kit... which is how it should have been done in the first place by Ludwig. I still love Ludwig drums, but like any other large company, profit seems to come before the little bit of extra labor time it would take to make them right the first time.

My apologies for going on so much about this, but I'm passionate about drums and drum building!

Mark! You have more then "paid homage to Ludwig's golden years"... absolutely GORGEOUS! The very 1st set my parents bought for me.. ( in 1967 no less! ) .. was the Ludwig Downbeat. These took me all the way back. BEAUTIFUL!Tommyp

Tommyp!

I'm thrilled that my kit takes you back to your first kit... a Downbeat! And, thank you for appreciating what I've done. I don't plan to gig with the kit. It will just be displayed and I'll play on it from time to time. Who knows, they might be worth something in another 20 years! LoLoLoLo

Real nice! I have been thinking that I just want one kit that can kind of do it all and that looks like it could be it! I think those sizes are perfect for any situation! What heads do have on them, especially the kick? Also, can you get a better pic of the spurs??Thanks

Lucky!

Thanks for your compliments! I'm using stock Ludwig heads on all drums. Coated Medium for the batter and Clear Medium for the resonant side. The bass drum has Smooth White Heavy (1000 weight) on both sides, with the Script logo on front. The addition of white felt muffling strips, in the correct horizontal placement for Ludwig drums, is all that's needed for a great sound!

The actual spurs are Danmar reproductions and are really nice. I've included pictures showing the vintage P1216A brackets. Is that what you wanted to see? The brackets are mounted on the original Ludwig spacers. The combination of these spacers and positioning the brackets slightly forward from their 60's location, results in a very stable bass drum. No rocking!

Just beautiful drums.Sorry to hear that the edges were so poorly done.Ludwig might need to step up post production inspection standards .

I agree that with what you pay for a custom USA made kit,and the waiting time involved, you should expect perfection or as close to perfection as possible.

Ludwig has made great strides in the past few years and it would be a shame to see things starting to fall off the plate now.

The rail, mounting cradles and chromed plates are vintage Ludwig. The four attaching machine screws that hold the rail to the shell are stainless steel and all the interior washers and nuts are very clean original Ludwig pieces. The upper arm is a Maxwell reproduction. Steve makes a perfect replica and about the only way you can tell it's not a Ludwig part is because it's not stamped "Ludwig" on the back!

As you can see, the rail has very little wear and shines nicely. Most of the other bolts are chromed versions... including those two little bolts and lock-washers that hold the rail to the cradles. All the hex nuts, that tighten with a Ludwig wrench, are original Ludwig, show very little wear and really shine!

I can vouch for Mark as this is a true homage to a great classic kit. I've had the opportunity to see it and play it (gently, as Mark knows I'm a basher!!) and it sounds as good as it looks. The 14 floor tom is IMO is the shine on this diamond, it is magical as is the whole kit.Bearing edge issues I heard a lot of firsthand and I know that Mark is a perfectionist to the truest word and I'm glad he got them fixed!!Nice work and kit Mark!!

Gary!!!!

You're my biggest supporter! I'm sure you know what I mean when I say I didn't need any more kits... but this one I couldn't help getting!

I'm thrilled to have been an inspiration to you! The maple shells really sound great. Just need to spend a little extra time with the 8x12 to get it to "sing" when mounted on the rail consolette. However, since it's more of a "60's" kit, the rack tom will sound like it!

Also, I was prepared for a 3 month wait, but Ludwig delivered in about 6 weeks!

This is a really beautiful drumset. Seriously, this wrap becomes one of my fav finishes (besides Rogers' Mardi gras).

Congrats on this kit!
