maple. Mahogany would be too brittle.
My New Old Ludwigs
That shot is from a flash photo, and the wood does look quite red as a result. In person, under lights or daylight, they're med-oakish brown.Bermuda
So the first pics are more color correct... excellent.
The kit is really incredible, very striking visually. The examples I have seen have been the black lacquer and the white lacquer version and in my opinion they just don't look anywhere near as aesthetically pleasing as your set - those versions lack the contrast and the "wood"-ware simply blends into the kit. I would argue it's one of the most appealing kits I've seen (and certainly the best example from this genre!!!).
OMG! What an amazing set! I have seen only one other Victory set with this color combination. The other set also had the wooden floor tom holder. I have done alot of research on the WWII sets and the variations were pretty much random. When the drum companies were allowed to go back to manufacturing with metal, all of the surplus wood parts were disposed of, just another reason these are getting so hard to find. WOW ~ WOW ~ WOW! I LOVE THIS SET ! Bowing Jump For Joy
I would say those are original for sure. They must have spent most of their life in cases. Did you have to do any cleanup? How are the hoops constructed? are they one piece steam bent with a scarf joint? Or are they some sort of lamination?
The hoops are 3 thick plies, each appears to be scarfed into itself. Kinda hard to tell, a lot of those seams are clean and occasionally invisible. I'll guess they're maple, but the grain has a mahogany look at times.

These were very clean, just a little dusty. A soft dry cloth took care of that. I may go through and polish the wrap for a smooth finish in case anyone touches them, but they already look great to the eye.
