My New old drum set Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I got new set today! Unfortunately, I still haven't sold my Ludwig Rockers set (but I did sell both the marching snares!!) and I can only keep 2 sets. So, my dad says I should keep this one but I really like my Premier set. This one seems pretty old, but the 13" tom as a blue and olive badge, so I don't know for sure. The guy I bought them from got them new in 1966 I think he said. He added the tom mount in the 1970's. It came with 4 old Zildjian cymbals (2 ride, 1 crash and 1 hi hat), a tambourine thingy, a cow bell and these things that go across the cymbals. I spent ALL of my money on them. They were $400. The bottom hoops are missing and they aren't perfect, but they look cool.

I know I'm keeping my Vistalite set but now I have to decide between these, my sparkle green Premier set! or the white Ludwig Rockers set.

Julia.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

you should have something very nice there. that appears to be a Ludwig black oyster pearl kit. sometimes blue oyster looks a lot like that. but from what I see that is black oyster. if the 13 was added, then that double tom mount was added. I see 8 lugs on the bass drum. that makes it a 20. so, looks like you have what was a 20/12/14 Ludwig downbeat kit. the badge in the center of the floor tom puts it mid 65 or earlier. I also see a red felt muffler which is also early 65 or earlier. the hi hat stand looks to be an 1121 wfl speed king hi hat that would also be found with that kit. in other words, if its black oyster, you've got what ringo played during the early craze of the beatles. amazing find. i'm gonna look at the pictures some more and see what I can spot.

the downbeats were catalog listed with a speedmaster reversible bass pedal. you don't see too many of them though. looks like you have one there. the cymbals could be very special if they were from that period as well. stamps and so forth could help us identify those for you. I don't see the hi hat thing you mentioned. maybe a Ludwig hi hat tambourine?

trust me. this is the kit that you want to keep!

if you got any of the cymbal stands with it, the one on the left by the hi hat stand looks to be Ludwig 1400 flat based stand with the button feet. those can be hard to find and would also be era correct for that kit.

you mentioned things that go across the cymbals. are they aluminum arms with sizzlers on them, screw onto the center wingnut ?

My suggestion would be to keep this kit, sell the Rockers, and keep the Premier and the Vistalite kits. Tell your Dad three kits is not too many. I have three and about 25 snares. Many of the folks around here have dozens of kits.

Good luck.

Julia - do not sell that kit! It's the most valuable one you currently own. Just look at this and then think again about selling the entire kit:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ludwig-60s-Vintage-14x14-Floor-Tom-Original-Blue-Oyster-Pearl-Downbeat-Excellent-/200942593642?pt=Vintgae_Drums_Percussion&hash=item2ec91ca66a

That is a rare and valuable little kit you purchased. It happens to be one of those kits you can keep for life and have it increase in value year after year. If you put that kit up on ebay it'll bring anywhere from $1600 to $2000+ (if a bidding war starts,) just as she sits right now.

You scored Big-time little girl! You have old drummers like me drooling over your find. $400? You stole them! You'd have to spend about $400 on ebay just to replace one of the rack toms. Congrats on a terrific find and buy.

John

Too many great drums to list here!
