My New Ludwig Standards

Loading...

Hey guys!!!

So I've been so excited about my new Ludwig Standard drums, and i've spent sooo much time giving them a deep clean, that i thought i may as well share them with the world! I actually got this kit as a present for my best friend's 21st, and i figured instead of 25 of us all getting something he doesn't want, i'd organise all of us to put in and get him this bad boy!

Overall I've spent 16 hours over 2 days on the bass drum, 11 hours over 2 days on the rack tom, 10 hours over 2 days on the floor tom, and 5 hours on the snare drum.

Sizes are: 22 x 14 bass, 13 x 9 rack tom, 16 x 16 floor tom (there's also a 12 x 8 rack tom, but I haven't cleaned it yet, and I like the look of the luddy's with just one tom on the bass drum - so sophisticated.) All granitone interiors.

Luckily, when the Ludwig Standards started running out of their cheaper hardware that they were using on the drums, they started using the better, more expensive hardware that went on the Superclassics -- this is one of those kits!!!! I figure it must come from 1974 for that reason.

I'll show you some before/after images, she was pretty banged up when i got her!

Here's the before:

There are Standard logos for your bass drum front head available on E-Bay for $6.99. That would be a great finishing touch. Standards with classic lugs, beautiful!!

IF the kit is from '74, the snare is older. They went from the P83 strainer to the P85 sometime between 68 and 71, according to the snare catalogs, here:

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_snare_drum_catalog_pages.html

There is a gap as we have a 68 and 71, nothing in between. So, the snare at least is older than 74.

That said, this is a good looking kit and you have done a great thing! I have given a few kits to drummers and the gratitude you will get in return is nothing short of amazing, especially if he is in a position that would financially cause embarrassment on his part.

When are you presenting them to him? You must take pics, or a video would be even better, of the event!

hey guys!!!

haha well I did allllll of the restoration on the drums, that's what took so long! i didn't do any of the restoration on the house though. maybe that'll be my next project??? :P

and i've noticed those "Ludwig Standard" stickers, and i'm definitely gonna look at them with my friend when i give them to him, and also those reissue rubber feet for the floor tom and bass drum spurs. (just those little details which make a difference.)

And the "Ludwig Standard" line finished in 1974, so i don't think the snare can be older???

You are right though jonnistix, this snare does have the p83 strainer, but according to the 1968, and the 1971 catalogue, the p83 strainer was used for both

- from the 1968 catalogue "...both models feature 8 lug tensioning, the popular p83 throw off and inner tone control."

- from the 1971 catalogue "...both models deature 8 lug tensioning, the popular p83 throw off and inner tone control."

exactly the same!

and i'm thinking of waiting until he goes to university for the day, then get his older brother to let me in, set them up nicely in his room, and get everyone to come around before he gets home. and...."SURPRISE!!!!!!"

i DEFINITELY wanna get it on video. I'll post it up here when i give them to him, but it'll be about a month or so

74 would have been the "youngest". They get "older" from there (made in 73, 72, 71, 70, 69, 68 etc).

What Would You Do

I'm pretty sure Ludwig used up their supply of P-83's on the Standard line of snare drums.I got my kit in December of 71 and had to wait 3 weeks for the snare to be shipped by Ludwig to Sam Ash,because I wanted the chrome one instead of the blue sparkle one with the kit..I picked up the snare mid January 72,and it had the block logo P-83 on it.
